The Upper School is celebrating Banned Books Week (Sept. 23-29) with a display that features books that have previously been banned. Students are encouraged to check out a book and then freely discuss why they think it was banned.
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores, and libraries. This year's theme, “Banning Books Silences Stories,” is a reminder that everyone needs to speak out against the tide of censorship.
According to the American Library Association, the books that were banned and challenged most between the years of 2000 and 2009 were:
1. Harry Potter (series) by J.K. Rowling
2. Alice series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
3. The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
4. And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson/Peter Parnell
5. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
6. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
7. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (series) by Alvin Schwartz
8. His Dark Materials (series) by Philip Pullman
9. ttyl; ttfn; l8r, g8r (series) by Lauren Myracle
10. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
