On Saturday, the WolfPack track and field teams competed in the first day of the Cobb County championship meet at Marietta High School. Finals were conducted for all field events as well as the 1600; the meet which included 21 schools from all classes (A thru 6A). For all other shorter distance running events, preliminary heats were conducted, with the top eight runners advancing to tonight's finals (the 3200m will also be conducted as a final tonight). After day one, the boys team stands in seventh place with 19 points.
The 1600m race featured a matchup between two of Georgia’s top milers, WolfPack senior Robby Keough and Kell senior Logan Poteet, who won the event last year. This year, with a strong kick on the last lap, Robby won the Cobb County championship by nearly four seconds, in a time of 4:18.89. After two to three hours to rest and recover, Robby went on to turn in the top time over four preliminary heats of the 800m, qualifying for tonight's final.
Senior Norman Harris had a day to remember, collecting nine points for his efforts with PRs in two field events. Norman tied Whitefield’s high jump record with a leap of 6’2”, earning third place honors and six points for his team. Junior Jordan Greer also PR’d in the high jump, with a ninth place leap of 5’10” and just missing at 6’0”. Norman’s day was not over, as he also placed sixth in the triple jump, going a distance of 42’1.75”, well over a foot past his previous PR.
Sophomore Brian Pickens will join Robby tonight for individual competition after qualifying for the final in the 400m race by finishing eighth in the prelims with a PR time 50.91.
In addition to the individual race finals for Robby and Brian, freshmen Nicholas Harris and Brooks Merkle will run in the 3200m final. Additionally, Whitefield’s boys and girls 4x400 relay teams will also compete in the final event of the meet. Good luck to our runners tonight!
