Class of 2013 GraduatesClass of 2013 Graduates

Sixty-two seniors graduated during Whitefield Academy’s 16th Commencement Services held at Mount Paran Church this past Saturday. Led by Headmaster Dr. Kevin Bracher, Upper School Principal Dr. Susan Banke, and Board of Trustees Chair Marsha Burke, these superlative seniors were handed their diplomas as proud parents, family members, and friends looked on.

“Our faculty has prepared our graduate for this as evidence in over four million in scholarships, 29 members of the National Honor Society, 158 individual academic honors, and 93 college acceptances from schools all across the U.S.,” said Dr. Bracher.

During the ceremony Morgan Landers, 2013 salutatorian and Holt Merkle, 2013 valedictorian, shared their thoughts about graduation and moving into a new phase of life. Morgan remembered highlights of the year and spotlighted the wide array of talents represented in the senior class. Holt thanked his classmates for challenging him to push himself academically and encouraged them to meet college with determination and grit.

“Perseverance produces character,” he said. “God created us to face challenges boldly and without fear.”

R.V. Brown, the keynote speaker, energized the crowd with his passionate and insightful directives to the senior class.

“In the word American the last four letters are I-C-A-N,” said Brown, president of Outreach to America’s Youth. “Today is about inspiring our students to run the race before them, to lean on their peers and never compromise their faith.”

Brown then highlighted the 10 commandments of graduation through the following acronym:

1.   God guides you.

2.   Respond to your call of righteousness.

3.   Acknowledge God in all your actions.

4.   Determined to make a difference in your generation.

5.   Understand that you cannot compromise your values.

6.   Attitude is everything.

7.   Trust Him.

8.   Influence your generation to be the best.

9.   Obedience is better than sacrifice, obedience breeds success.

10. Nothing should stop you from serving God.

“R.V’s keynote address reminded us that this generation of graduates stands ready to serve, and is equipped to lead,” said Dr. Bracher.

Whitefield held the annual Eighth-Grade Commissioning service recently, spotlighting students with high academic achievement and recognizing each individual student for an outstanding character quality demonstrated in their lives and actions throughout the year.

The character qualities mentioned were studied during the school's StoneWorks program, a character education program which eighth graders participated in this year. During Stoneworks, parents and leaders addressed students on a regular basis, sharing their insight and personal testimonies as they related to these particular character qualities. Together, the character qualities spell the acronym WOLFPACK - W (Wisdome),  O (Ownership), L (Legacy), F (Faithfulness), P (Purity), A (Attitude), C (Courage), and K (Knowledge).

Dr. Ron Farrar, Middle School principal, commissioned each student; freshman Luke Miltner and Emily Sumlin charged the class to maintain their faith and character as they begin a new phase of life in the Upper School; and Tyrone Johnson, Upper School Dean of Students, prayed for God's grace and wisdom in each of their lives.

Lynn Dupree named 6A Athletic Director of the Year and John Hunter lauded as Lacrosse Coach of the Year

The Georgia Athletic Director Association and the Georgia Boys Lacrosse High School Coaches Council awarded accolades to Whitefield Academy leaders.  Lynn Dupree - athletic director, Whitefield Academy, was named the Georgia Athletic Director Association (GADA) Region 6A Athletic Director of the Year, while his colleague, John Hunter was presented with the 2013 Coach Award as the best lacrosse coach in the state by the Georgia Boys Lacrosse High School Coaches Council.

“What an incredible year for Whitefield’s athletics! We field 24 varsity interscholastic sport teams from basketball and soccer to swimming and lacrosse,” said Dr. Kevin Bracher – headmaster, Whitefield Academy. “Both Lynn Dupree and John Hunter exemplify the servant leadership we teach our students.  They walk their talk, and their efforts are paying off by producing the next generation of our country’s leaders.  It’s an honor to work alongside these wise, Christian men every day, and to know the indelible impact they make on our students.”

The GADA Regional Athletic Director of the Year is decided when each region nominates a representative in March.  GADA issues a formal letter telling the nominee about the process and application, which is subsequently reviewed by a committee of outstanding peers in the field of athletics.

Dupree is in his second year at Whitefield Academy. He has been in Christian education for 31 years and has been an athletic director for the past 26 years. He has coached multiple sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, track and volleyball.  During his career, he has built and grown championship athletic programs of increasing size and stature, trained coaches, supervised coaches and athletic trainers and helped raise money to enhance athletic departments and build athletic facilities. He was also instrumental in the development of and served as Executive Director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS), a private school athletic association.  Dupree holds a master’s degree in educational administration from Houston Baptist University.

“There are two things that I love about coaching: first, I am given the right to walk in the lives of students in a very personal way and second, I find great joy in watching a student achieve at the highest level,” said Dupree. “When a student works to possess a skill and then takes that skill and uses it to be successful, it is very gratifying!”

Hunter led the Whitefield Wolfpack to a 15-4 overall record and a playoff berth in only their third year of Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Varsity Boys Lacrosse play. Coach Hunter was selected by the council as the Coach of the Year for all six classes (A-AAAAAA).

“I love inspiring students to do more than they think they can,” said Hunter. “This year’s players are committed to their team. With unity, focus, prayer and passion these guys did what they wanted to do - be a part of something special. I am honored to be a part of their success.”

The athletic program at Whitefield is designed to provide opportunities for competitive athletics while enriching the total experience of each student-athlete and of students in general. From the lower school to the upper school, opportunities are available for boys and girls to reach their top physical and mental potential through athletic performance, to further their experiences in building great teams, to experience positive physical well-being and to empower positive citizenship.

Whitefield Closes On Property For Campus ImprovementWhitefield Closes On Property For Campus Improvement

Whitefield Academy closed on a nearly two acre tract of land adjacent to the current campus this week. Whitefield auction co-chairs Becky and Rich Matherne and Suzanne Howard presented the deed to headmaster, Dr. Kevin Bracher, and Board of Trustees chair, Marsha Burke. The tract was purchased for campus improvements with funds raised at the school’s 2013 auction.

The two acre tract of land was the home of Mrs. Mary Poss who passed away last summer. In her retirement, Mrs. Poss visited the Whitefield campus once a month for lunch where she built a connection with Whitefield families, faculty and students. Proceeds from this year’s auction were used to purchase the Poss property from the estate. The acreage aligns the Whitefield tennis courts, and will be used for the development of a state-of-the-art lower school facility.

“The generosity and goodwill of our community is incredible,” said Kevin Bracher – headmaster, Whitefield Academy. “It is a continuing move to the future and a strong indicator of the growth that we have at Whitefield Academy. When Whitefield started in 1996, we had 96 students in grades six through 12. Today, we have 650 students from PreK-12th grade. The Whitefield community is thriving and continually moving forward.”

Whitefield has seen significant growth over the last decade of admissions cycles. By expanding the campus, Whitefield Academy has the opportunity to add over 100 families in the next two years.

In August 2012, after raising $13 million over a three year capital campaign, the Academy opened its newest doors, the 55,000-square-foot Ida and Allen Morris Upper School.  Morris Hall Upper School includes an art room, black box theater, 16 classrooms, computer lab, lecture hall, library and science labs. Plans for the lower school are forthcoming.

Whitefield Academy sophomores Naomy Grand'Pierre and Robby Keough were named to the 2013 Cobb County All-County Track team.

Naomy took the top spot in the 1600m at the state track meet with a time of 5:05, securing a fourth consecutive state win in the 1600m for Whitefield. Alumnus Cameron Thornton ('12) won the three previous years in the boys division. Naomy also ran the first leg on Whitefield's 4 x 400 relay team, which earned the state runner-up spot. She was one of five girls from Whitefield that competed at the state meet and led the team to an overall fourth place finish.

"Naomy has incredible stamina developed through years of competitive swimming," said Paul Alar, Whitefield community coach who trains Naomy. "She also has one of the fastest 400m times in the U.S. for a 1600m runner."

"Naomy is totally focused on obtaining results, and refuses to back down to any challenge in any level of competition," he added.

Robby qualified and competed in both the 800m and 1600m in the

state tournament and secured second place finishes in both. His time of 4:15 in the 1600m broke the existing state record and was fast enough to have won any other class (1A-6A) at the state meet.

Robby began his running career in the seventh grade when he joined the cross-country team to keep in shape for tennis. He made the startling discovery then that he was an excellent runner and enjoyed the sport. Others also took note of Robby's natural abilities and he was featured as a Rising Star in the November 2010 issue of In The Game magazine.

"Robby has a God-given natural stamina," said Coach Alar. "He has an incredible work ethic, a very high pain threshold, and top end speed."

Congratulations to Naomy and Robby!

BLOG POST: A Perfect Trip To American IdolBLOG POST: A Perfect Trip To American Idol

Tom and Helen Walker, parents of Emily (K) and Ryan (1st) had the time of their lives after winning the bid for an American Idol package at the 2013 Whitefield auction. The package included two round trip airfares from Atlanta to Los Angeles on Delta, three nights at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and two tickets to be in the live audience during a performance night (down to three contestants) and also during the results show the next evening (announcing the final two contestants). Here's their story:

by Tom and Helen Walker

When we went to the Whitefield auction, there was one “live bidding” package that we were very interested in – the American Idol trip. We’ve been huge fans of the show for a long time. On the night of the auction, we were lucky enough to win the package.

At the time of the auction, we had no idea which three contestants we would see at the live show, but certainly had our favorites. The week before the trip, we watched nervously, hoping that our favorite contestant (Kree Harrison) would make the final three. We were so pleased that she made it, and that we would get to see her perform live. Rounding out the final three were Angie Miller and the ultimate winner, Candice Glover.

Frankly, it could not have worked out better because Angie and Candice were our “other favorites.”  However, Kree held (and still holds) a special place in our hearts. Not only does she have an amazing voice, but we just loved her back story. She and her sister lost both parents when they were younger.  The cared for each other, supported each other, and made it through some tough times.

Indeed, it seemed that God had his eye on Kree, helping her to overcome extreme adversity and to achieve great heights.

At the risk of being overly cliché, we can definitely say that this trip was a “once in a lifetime” experience for us. The flight was perfectly easy, the Beverly Hilton was truly an amazing hotel, and the whole American Idol experience was awesome.

The American Idol studio is surprisingly small; it probably holds no more than 300 people.  Of course, that meant that every single seat in the place was amazing (and ours were no exception). You literally feel like you can reach out and grab the stage. The live television experience was very interesting indeed. It is amazing to think that we were two of only a few hundred people seeing the show in person  - while over 100 countries and hundreds of millions of people saw it live (without the “and in person” charm).

Ryan Seacrest was the ultimate professional, never missing a take or

a beat (making hometown Atlanta proud). The judges were very entertaining and needless to say, the contestants were awesome. Hearing the purity of their God-given voices is a whole  different and incredible experience when it's from just yards away. While our beloved Kree did

not ultimately win the crown, she did pull an amazing upset in making it to the finale. We like to think that our “Whitefield Academy ♥‘s Kree” sign is what pushed her over the top to make the “final two.”

Although we voted for Kree in the finale, we give major kudos to Candice for winning.  She is truly an amazing singer.  Her performance of “Somewhere” from West Side Story and the duet she sang with Jennifer Hudson in the finale show were two of the most amazing performances you will ever see (they are pretty easy to find on YouTube).

Although the American Idol experience was the focus of our trip, we had an enormously good time outside of the studio as well. Whether it was shopping (window shopping mostly so that we could save our money for the Whitefield Annual Fund, of course) on Rodeo Drive, going to one incredible restaurant after another, or doing the very touristy, but well worth it, Hollywood tour of stars’ homes, the “Strip,” and the Hollywood Walk of Fame), it was all amazing.

We apologize for repeatedly using the same superlatives, but we simply ran out of new ones! Of course, we had to get our picture taken with the Hollywood sign in the background.

Simply put, this trip was amazing, awesome, super-fun, super-cool, enormously enjoyable, incredible, and just plain supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! We are so happy that we won this trip, and of course, we are even happier that we were able to provide the funds to our kid’s school – the incredible Whitefield Academy.

As the last spring 2013 exams were being turned in, the Guatemala Mission Team, led by Whitefield parent Bill Sandman, was packing up to fly to Guatamala on Saturday morning, May 25  Eighteen Whitefield students and seven Whitefield parents joined other in an exciting adventure that would prove to be a life-changing experience for everyone.

The team flew into Guatemala City and stayed in dorms at the Medical Mission Ministries compound.  Each day began with a powerful devotion from Dr. Hermann Alb, providing focus and energy to go out into the villages and communities and connect with many wonderful people.  The entire missions team was made up of 34 people who worked hand-in-hand with Dr. Alb, his team of medical professionals, and translators to provide medical care and the love of Christ to residents of several villages.  Over the course of the week, the team provided medical and dental clinics and children’s programs in 8 different communities and served over 500 people.

"Students had the opportunity to witness to, pray with, and encourage the people in the clinics after they saw the doctor," said Bill Sandman. "They learned a lot from the Guatemalans because in many of their lives they saw what true dependence on God looks like."

Along the way, students heard many heartbreaking stories, which reminded the team of the blessings and privileges we take for granted.  However, there was also time to connect with children and feel joy from the smiles and hugs that they were always willing to share.

Several of the students were able to serve as their own translators and seemed to get more confident in their Spanish-speaking skills as the week went on.  There was time each night to reflect on the day, share some stories, and jot notes in journals.

As the team packed up to leave, Justin Brendel (12th) and Ty McLemore (10th) were preparing to stay another week. They moved into the city of Antigua to live with a host family for a week and participate in a Spanish language and cultural immersion program.  On the flight home, many of the students were already talking about their plans to return next summer. God is Great!

Whitefield Academy is excited to announce the founding Alumni Board. The Whitefield Alumni Board exists to support the goals of Whitefield Academy, and to strengthen the ties between Whitefield alumni, the Whitefield community, and the community at large.

The Alumni Board held its first meeting last month at Muss & Turners in Smyrna, reminiscing together about their days at Whitefield, then settling down to outline the goals of the Board as well as plan upcoming events and programs for Whitefield graduates.

Some of the goals discussed were:

• Creating opportunities for Whitefield alumni to speak to current juniors and seniors about their transition from high school to college, their college experience, and their work experience after college graduation

• Connecting alumni with current and past parents for networking opportunities in their field of interest

• Pairing alumni currently in college with Whitefield freshman entering the same institution to provide advice and support

• Planning unique opportunities and events for alumni to stay involved with Whitefield, by supporting the school through volunteerism and contributions as well as participating in special events like the annual Christmas party. Other potential events discussed were reunions with favorite teachers and sporting events such as ultimate Frisbee.

“This year we’ve decided to hold a special Christmas party for alumni of all ages,” said Stephanie Moseley (’06), alumnus and Whitefield Special Programs and Events Planner. “I think it will give everyone an opportunity to share in community, but also network and learn from one another.”

Members of the board were nominated by their peers and selected by Whitefield administration. Current board members are: Summer Banks ('99), Jarvis Bronner ('04), Carter Chambliss Fawcett ('06), Emily Deeter Hasten ('05). Josh Jones ('09), Sarah McPhail ('07), Stephanie Serravezza Moseley ('06), Michael Nardi ('08), and Keeley Naughton ('08). Carter Fawcett was elected chairman of the board and Josh Jones was elected vice-chairman.

Michael Fernandes is Whitefield’s new academic dean!  All of Fernandes’s experience is in independent schools in the Orlando area. He taught Latin and history in middle school and upper school for nine years.  For the last 11 years, he has served in school leadership positions which include middle school principal, upper school principal, and assistant headmaster. Most recently, he led the division principals and academic team as the assistant headmaster of a for-profit, Pre-K to 12 independent school of 1,080 students.

“Michael has an outstanding reputation as a collaborative leader who cultivates simultaneous increases in student enrollment and academic performance,” said Dr. Kevin Bracher, headmaster.

Fernandes has extensive experience with rigorous testing and academic programs, including AP, ACT/SAT, ERB, IB, technology, and top-tier college admissions.  He has served on multiple accreditation teams for the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS).

He and his wife, Kelly, have been involved in church ministry for a number of years.  Fernandes has taught in children’s ministry; Kelly has been part of the church praise and worship team; and they both have worked with the church youth group.

“Michael and Kelly have had a yearning to become part of a Christ-centered school community for quite some time and have been praying for direction each year in this regard,” said Bracher. “It wasn’t until this year that they sensed a release from their previous call to the ‘mission field’ of independent secular schooling. They are very enthusiastic about this transition to Whitefield Academy for themselves and their two children Madison (7th grade) and Josh (3rd grade).

Fernandes’s academic background includes the following:

• B.A., University of Florida (history major and religion major, emphasis in historical Christianity)

• M.Ed., Stetson University (educational leadership major, emphasis in curriculum and instruction)

• Additional graduate coursework, University of Central Florida and Reformed Theological Seminary (over 36 credit hours in ancient Greek and ancient history with emphasis in early Christianity)

“Michael is known as a man of integrity and character among his supervisors and colleagues,” said Bracher. “I’m very excited to have this talented educator as part of our covenant community!”

The varsity girls basketball team took their first trip to the University of North Caolina at Chapel Hill team camp on Thursday, June 27. The Lady WolfPack competed against numerous other teams attending the camp, and went 5-3 against solid competition.

Seniors Frances Hamilton, Kerry Anna Lemasters, Grace Miller, and Elaine Sharitz led the way on this fun but very important trip. The girls learned strong high pressure man-to-man defense as well as many different conditioning drills to use this next season. Coach Timothy Unsicker was the most encouraged with how well the new freshman (Lauren Burke, Lillian Hill, and Samara Huggins) were able to fit in and contribute.

The girls were also anchored with good play from juniors Alexa Perez and Hannah Brown, as well as sophomores Logan Pearce and Sydney Wingate. Congratulations for a great start to the 2013-2014 Lady WolfPack basketball season.  Go Pack!!!
