This past holiday season was full of activity for members of Whitefield’s fine arts program. Students from all three schools performed concerts and shows at Whitefield and in venues across Atlanta. The month of November opened with Flavors of Fall, held in the Louise Owens Theater, which featured the jazz band, two concert bands, two orchestras, and Middle School chorale and handbell choir. December opened with Cookies & Carols, the annual concert of Christmas music performed by Middle and Upper School students and followed by a reception of holiday cookies.

“I am extremely proud of the great directors and fantastic student performers in our varied ensembles,” said Stacy Quiros, Whitefield fine arts director. “Festivals of Fall and Cookies & Carols were both evenings of high quality musicianship. It was especially fun to bring in the Christmas season with music dedicated to the birth of our Savior.”

In November, the Middle School drama class performed, “Songs & Scenes: An Evening Of Broadway,” with 22 seventh- and eighth-graders singing, dancing, and acting to Broadway’s most beloved musicals including Oliver, Hairspray, Fiddler on the Roof, Beauty and the Beast, Jersey Boys, Annie, The Wizard of Oz, and Annie Get Your Gun.

Lower School students wowed parents and families with their talent and skill at the annual Variety Show in November, performing original skits and musical numbers. Students also performed at the Lower School Recital and Christmas Program in December, which featured ballet, guitar, chorale, and violin students from Whitefield's After-School program and Christmas music from all grade levels.

“Highlights of the Variety Show included dancing to Michael Jackson tunes and a rap about what else? Toast. There was also a rousing Broadway vocal rendition that everyone enjoyed,” said Brian Coski, Lower School music teacher. “The recital and Christmas program were just as special. It is always a pleasure to see the progress of our after-school students as they show off what they have learned throughout the semester and the Christmas program was fun as well as worshipful.”

Outside of school, the Orchestra 2 class, Middle School choir, and Middle School handbell ensemble performed at The Hallmark Buckhead, a retirement community, and Trinity Presbyterian Church. A volunteer group from the marching band led Santa Claus into the town of Smyrna during a parade, entertaining hundreds at Smyrna's tree lighting ceremony. The Whitefield jazz band hosted a luncheon for Lindley Sixth-Grade Academy honor students and performed at the Governor's Mansion, the Brawner House in Smyrna, Delmar Gardens, and The Renaissance on Peachtree, a retirement community.

“The residents adored the Whitefield students,” said Loxola Phillips, program supervisor at The Renaissance. ”The band played some Glenn Miller pieces that they absolutely loved and afterwards the residents kept chatting among themselves about how talented all the musicians were. They especially loved how the students stayed afterwards to talk about their music, their college plans, and their school.”
