This past weekend Whitefield added three state titles to its list of athletic accolades. The varsity girls tennis team won the Class 1A Private School State Championship on Saturday, May 10. Junior Robby Keough knocked out two state titles over the weekend, crossing the finish line in first place in the 1600m male race on Thursday, then placing first again in the 800m male race on Saturday.
Facing the previously unbeaten Providence Christian, the varsity girls tennis team played the most intense tennis matches of the season. First off the court with a win was the doubles team of junior Amanda Brasileiro and sophomore Megan Smith, who outlasted their opponents 6-4, 6-4. The other doubles team of senior Caroline Holliday and junior Megan Schwarzkopf overcame an early deficit to rally the win 7-6, 7-5. Minutes later senior Kerry Anna Lemasters clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-6 win. Junior Rachel Hicks had battled a formidable opponent and senior Annie Sickling was leading when the team victory was achieved.
This ended an incredibly successful season with the team finishing 15-1. Singles players Rachel, Kerry Anna and Annie cumulatively achieved 35 victories. Megan Smith and Amanda were 7-2 as a doubles team together; Caroline and Megan Schwarzkopf ended the season undefeated, with a two-year record of 26-1 playing together.
The team would like to thank Coach Rick, Coach Danny and Coach Dupree for all the guidance, instruction and support during the season. Pack Rackets are #1!
Junior Robby Keough captured the title in the Boys Class A 1600m run at the state tournament on Thursday with a winning time of 4:21.84, holding off a challenge down the stretch from Galloway star
Reilly Friedman. On Saturday afternoon, Robby braved a downpour, which soaked the runners and the track, but did not stop him from securing another state title in the 800m, winning the race in a time of 1:55.99.
Robby will continue his training regimen in preparation for two more upcoming track meets, competing in the mile event at both the Golden South Classic in Orlando on May 24 and the New Balance National Outdoor Championships in Greensboro on June 13.
Other Whitefield athletes excelled at the state tournaments as well. At the boys meet, Whitefield's 4 x
100 relay team of Jordan Edge, Evan Johnson, James “JB” Johnson, and Brandon Morris broke its own school record with a time of 44.53, finishing in sixth place. Senior Alice Fugate wrapped up her stellar track career at Whitefield with two strong performances at the girls meet in Albany. Alice finished sixth in the 100m dash in a time of 12.89 and seventh in the 200m dash, with a time of 26.53. Alice has been a consistently high performer at Whitefield for four straight years and will continue her track career next year at Rhodes College.
Special thanks to Coach Paul Alar, sho has helped Whitefield distance athletes secure state titles for five consecutive years. Cameron Thornton (‘12) won a state title in 2010, 2011, and 2012 Naomy Grand’Pierre captured the girls 1600m title in 2013, and Robby earned two top spots in 2014.
