The spring sports season is underway at Whitefield! Here’s a look at our varsity teams and what kind of season they are anticipating.
Varsity Baseball
The varsity baseball team spent the offseason conditioning and playing other sports in preparation for the spring season. The strengths of this year’s team are pitching and defense. Junior Bailey Combs, a Georgia commit, promises to dominant the mound this year and freshman Sam Fuller has already pitched a shutout game. Sam promises to help maintain the growth of the team. In addition to these strengths, there is strong student leadership on the team that will help unite players to play cohesively as a unit.
“Matt Olson is a tremendous team player who will put this team on his shoulders and lead us on and off the field,” said Coach Michael Bailey. “Bradley Davidson is our quiet leader who leads by example.”’
Varsity Lacrosse
Last year’s varsity lacrosse team went 15-4, was a state qualifier, and won the Gannon Cup, the Class
1A championship. Key returning players this year are seniors Alex Manning, Justin Brendel, Braelin Phillips and junior Marcus Jones, all at midfield. Senior Harrison Weller and junior David Ballew are returning at attack. Returning key defensive players are junior Sky Dupree, and senior Noah DiGiorgio. Sophomore Ty McLemore has stepped into the starting goalie position vacated by Matt Milburn who is now playing at Baylor University.
Ten seniors from last year’s team graduated, and the Pack team lost key players including Matt, defensive players Chris Washington and Brennan Saul, attack players Dallas Darling and Preston Blair, and midfielders Max Rieves, Chandler Reagan, and Carter Fiveash. However, some talented freshmen have joined the team such as Jonathan Wood at attack, Sid Brendel at midfield, and Brenner McCutcheon at defense.
“The Whitefield WolfPack lacrosse team graduated a strong group of seniors in 2013,” said Coach John Hunter, “However; we have a very strong group of returning players and a very talented group of freshmen. The key for the season will revolve around attitude, effort and a strong commitment to the team. Each player has an essential role in the development of our season.”
Varsity Boys Soccer
The varsity boys soccer team is back in action this year and has been preparing for the season through conditioning, video instruction and skill drills. The strengths of this year’s team include the quality of play and coaching.
“We have key players like senior Peter Sengson and junior Kerry Martin who promise to lead us as a team. I’ve seen encouraging character development in these players, as well as in younger players like Jude Lewis and William Hellier,” said Coach Jamie Heiskell. “In addition, we have a lot of speed from our other players. We are a young team bringing the program back after a one year hiatus. We are working on team chemistry and ball handling skills. We are going to have a competitive season!
Varsity Girls Soccer
The varsity girls soccer team, who made it to the second round of playoffs last year, is depending on the senior leadership of Sophie Kemether, Elaine Sharitz, and Frances Hamilton to lead the team
throughout the season. New to the team is freshman goalkeeper Lauren Burke, who has played ODP soccer and promises to be a force in the net.
“Our biggest strength will be our defense,” said Coach Lou Nardi. “We have a lot of experienced players this year and they have great leadership qualities and a great relationship with the team.”
Varsity Tennis
The varsity boys and girls tennis teams are in position for a strong, competitive season. Several players prepared for the season with private instruction during the off-season and the team boasts strong senior leadership. Both teams are led by experienced players who have been in the program for several years. The senior girls and boys leading the team are Caroline Holliday, Kerry Anne Lemasters, Annie Sickling, Matthew Landry, David Lemasters, and Bennett Shilling.
“The tennis program at Whitefield Academy has a rich tradition. The girls have won four straight region titles and the boys team won the state championship in 2012,” said Lynn Dupree, athletic director. “This year’s teams have the talent to make deep runs into the playoffs and with dedication, development of their skill, and hard work, they could bring home the title in 2014.”
Varsity Track and Field
The Whitefield track team has been in the weight room since November, building general conditioning
to support our specific training during the season. On both the boys' and girls' side, Whitefield has a uniquely balanced squad. Many teams place well at state because they specialize in one event--distance, sprints, jumps, or throws. Because of the diverse talents on the squad, Whitefield could potentially score in each of these categories.
Returning to the team are young standouts such as Robby Keough, who was the fastest sophomore in the U.S. last season in the 1600m and the runner-up state champion. In the throws, senior Jaylen Hudson is poised for a breakout season to score in both the shot put and the discus. Senior Austin Joseph has been working hard to improve his state finish from last season in the triple jump and sophomore Evan Johnson looks to score in the long jump. On the girls side, Whitefield returns some balance with Corey Johnson (sophomore who scored in four events in state last year) as well as junior Naomy Grand Pierre, who is the defending girls 1600m champion.. Last season Naomy ran the second fastest girls' time of any section.
“Alice Fugate and James Johnson will provide strong senior leadership on the team,” said Coach Christian Cuthbert. “The coaches have attended clinics and are ready to work even harder than our athletes to achieve our goals.”
