Whitefield fourth-graders spent an exciting three days and two nights at the Driftwood Education Center on St. Simons Island. While they were there, they learned about ocean ecology, and the plants and animals of the salt marshes. They dissected a fish, stroked an alligator, held snakes, played in a mud pit, and went seining in the Atlantic Ocean.
Students also enjoyed a campfire and went on a night hike to learn about how night vision works. They learned about Georgia’s past, barrier islands,
and also saw the second largest live oak tree in the United States. Additionally, they saw the infamous St. Simons Lighthouse.
