Congratulations to rising senior Cameron Thornton who was recently selected to represent the USA at the IAAF World Youth Championships. Cameron was chosen for the team after an excellent 800-meter race at the World Youth Track and Field trials in Myrtle Beach. Blazing the race in 1:50.2, Cameron was one of 40 youth selected from across the United States to compete in the championships, which will be held in Lille, France, July 6-10.
Just recently, Cameron was also named the Marietta Daily Journal (MDJ) Cobb County Male Athlete of the Year. Cameron was named top athlete for all high school divisions, from single A to AAAAA schools.
This year Cameron won first place in Division A at the GHSA State Cross Country meet, finishing the race with a time of 16:02. With 600 meters left in the race Cameron was in third place, but took the lead with 300 meters left. The MDJ named Cameron Cobb County Cross Country Runner of the Year for bringing this state championship home to Cobb County.
Cameron also successfully won the state title in the 1600 for the second consecutive year in the state track meet. Cameron set a new personal record and new Whitefield school record time of 4:18.91, 3.5 seconds off his previous PR. He also won a state title for the 4x400m relay, with the help of his fellow track members: Murphy Alexander, Khalen Pinkett, and RJ Willis.
