After three quarters of a defensive stand-off between the WolfPack JV football team and the Strong Rock Patriots, the Pack proved victorious with an 8 to 6 win at home. With the scored dead-locked at zero, the Patriots broke the tie with the first score of the game in the fourth quarter. After the Strong Rock touchdown, an excessive celebration penalty was assessed on the extra point. This 15-yard penalty proved to be the difference in the game as Kris “K-Mart” Martin intercepted a Patriots pass in the end-zone to deny Strong Rock’s attempt on a long two-point conversion.
With the Pack down by six late in the fourth quarter, Bailey Combs, playing in the half-back position, took a pitch from QB Sky Dupree and hurled a perfect spiral to Matt Olsen at the goal line to tie the game 6-6 with only 2:04 left on the clock. In a crucial PAT attempt, Combs moved back to the quarterback position and found Dupree as his primary receiver to secure the two point conversion and put the Pack on top 8 to 6.
With two minutes left in the game, the WolfPack defense went back to work and held the Patriots to negative yardage on four downs, leaving 58 seconds on the clock, and ensuring the WolfPack victory.
The Pack defense found its way into the Strong Rock backfield all night. Whitefield got exceptional defensive stops from Bradley Davidson, Michael Hebert, William Burrell, Jaylen Hudson, and Steven Lemaster. Although the passing attack eventually won the game for the WolfPack, the one-two punch from running backs Jordan McAlpine and Nile Ball showed that Whitefield’s running game is a definite threat to ensuing opponents.
Justin Brendel had the longest catch of the day and proved to be a threat on the other side of the ball as well in the linebacker position. On special teams, freshman David Ballew made an impressive tackle while covering a punt. Overall, it was an impressive performance by the entire WolfPack JV squad, improving its record to 1-1 on the young season.
