In preparation for their field trip to Desoto Caverns this week, the third-graders have been learning about ancient cave art in Mrs. Hicks' class and even made attempts at creating their own versions.
With the help of Mrs. Fikse, they mixed paints in the science lab and used crumpled brown paper to mimic a rock face. Using their custom-blended paints, they created drawings of animals inspired by the Lascaux Cave in France, which is renowned for its over 600 excellently-detailed parietal wall paintings that decorate the interior walls and ceilings of the cave in impressive compositions.
This hands-on experience connecting art and science is one of many ways the Lower School incorporates STEAM concepts into the classroom.
