Ten Thousand Reasons kicked off a new year with a joint Middle and Upper School chapel on Sept. 15 and a Lower School chapel on Sept. 16. Recipients of last year's grants shared their experience with the application process and updated the community on how the funds have benefited their charities.
Last year's grant recipients included:
Amor y Esperanza - $20,000
Requested by Bailey Koenig (12th)
Impact: The grant has supported the operating expenses of this vibrant Christian school, which services impoverished children in Quito, Ecuador. Whitefield students serve at Amor y Espanza every summer through the Ecuador Mission Trip.
Effective Ministries (Niger) - $14,000
Requested by Hunter Bilotti (11th), Paulina Bilotti (9th), Carter Vaughan (3rd)
Impact: The grant has funded a new indoor kitchen in an orphanage in Niger, Africa, providing safe and nutritious meals and snacks for over 70 children.
Medical Missions Ministry (Guatemala) - $10,000
Requested by John Matherne (11th), Robert Matherne (10th), Jake Rivers (10th), Noah Howard (10th), Luke McLemore (10th), Patrick Spellissy (11th)
Impact: The grant has funded a nutritional program and supplements to village women of child-bearing age to help ensure safe and healthy pregnancies. This team of students secured a matching grant from another source to bring the total of their gift to Medical Missions to $32,000.
Alive Ministries (MUST Ministries) - $10,000
Requested by Caroline Kern (7th)
Impact: Grant funds supported existing food pantries as well as funded new food pantries in public schools across Cobb County. Pantries provide low-income families with affordable food options.
Safehouse Ministry - $5,000
Requested by Caleb Ryan (2nd)
Impact: The funds helped pay the salary of a social worker at Safehouse, which serves the homeless of Atlanta by providing food, job readiness training, and more.
Special Pops Tennis - $3,000
Requested by Hannah Morris (10th)
Impact: The grant supported a nutrition program to train Special Pops' intellectually-challenged athletes on healthy eating choices and habits.
Students interested in applying for grants this year are encouraged to visit the Ten Thousand Reasons website for more information and submit the student pledge form by October 1. After the pledge forms have been completed and reviewed, grant applications will be due on February 1, 2017. Students in grades one through 12 are eligible to participate.
