In front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the Whitefield varsity lacrosse team dueled with the Knights and emerged victorious. The WolfPack struck first, jumping to a 3-0 lead off of strong offensive work by attack men, Jonathan Wood (11th) and William Charles (12th). The Knights climbed back into the contest bringing the score to 3-2. While they kept the game close, Pace never led or tied the game. Aggressive defense by the WolfPack and smart goalkeeping by Will McCutcheon (10th), forced the Knights into making poor passes and turnovers.
The win allows Whitefield to control its destiny going into the playoffs and hold an important second place position in the region before going into the crossover game which will determine qualification for the post-season tournament.
The WolfPack defensive force was led by Joseph Schwartz (10th) with five ground balls (GB) and three caused turnovers (CT). Additional support came from Connor Callan (11th) with six GB; Mitchell Ryan (11th) with five GB and one CT; Carter Dixon (11th) with three GB and two CT; Thomas Joiner (10th) with four GB; Jack Charles (10th) with two GB and one CT; William and Carson Brown (11th) with two GB each; and Wills, Jack Fitzgerald (11th) Brenner McCutcheon (11th), and Jordan Saibu (11th) with one GB each.
Whitefield’s offense was dominated by the attack. Jonathan scored five goals and two assists; William netted three goals; and Jack C. added one goal for the attack. Mitchell led midfielders with two goals and two assists; and Joseph went coast-to-coast to add a long stick, defensive goal to the total.
The Whitefield varsity lacrosse team (11-1) faces off next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at East Paulding High School in Dallas, GA. The WolfPack hopes to finish strong in what has become a great season. Go Pack!
