Whitefield’s faculty and staff celebrated the close of another successful school year at a luncheon in the mezzanine of the Athletic Center on Friday, May 20. After a delicious meal, Dr. Kevin Bracher, headmaster, recognized the members of Whitefield’s faculty and staff for their commitment to excellence and their dedication to the mission of the school.

Several Whitefield employees received awards for their years of service. Five year awards were presented to: Christy Dixon, Lynn Dupree, Cheryl Farrar, Ron Farrar, John Hunter, Kayla Marsh, Christy McKinney, and Leanne Palmer. Ten-year service awards were given to Meghan Allen, Opal Anderson-Curling, Kerri Bounds, Dawn Byers, Jim DeGier, Libby Miltner, Dr. Jennifer Pinkett-Smith, and Elizabeth Qualls. Fifteen-year awards were given to Debbie Breault, Debbie Childree, Monica Johnson, and Tyrone Johnson.

Each year faculty and staff members vote to award a peer with one of five excellence awards acknowledging their commitment to the Whitefield mission, our students, and the entire Whitefield community. The Barnabas Award for Teaching Excellence is given to a Lower School teacher and was awarded to Steve Henson, Lower School music teacher. The Akers and Millner Award for Teaching Excellence is given to a Middle School teacher and was awarded to Kristen Windhorst, math teacher.  The David G. Jones Award for Teaching Excellence is given to an Upper School teacher and was awarded to Mary Huett, chemistry teacher. The Ed Vornbrock Award for Outstanding Service is given to a staff member and was awarded to Tina Ansley, Lower School teacher’s assistant. The Mark Tidwell Award for Coaching Excellence, named in memory of Mark Tidwell, Whitefield’s Fellowship of Christian Athlete leader for many years, was given to Crissy Watkins.

In addition to these Whitefield awards, Lower School Principal Jeannie Brostrand was presented the Distinguished Service Award from Georgia Independent Schools Association (GISA) for her many years of outstanding service in private. Christian education.

Following the presentation of the awards, Dr. Bracher shared a personal story about his own teaching experience. He was recently surprised when two former students contacted him by email to thank him. He had not seen or heard from the students in 20 years, yet each took the time to express their gratitude for being a good teacher.

“At first I thought to myself, ‘they must have been reminiscing together’ but that wasn’t the case,” said Dr. Bracher. “Some event in life just prompted them to remember me and then write. It was the Lord’s way of reminding me that we may or may not see how our service to our students is impacting others for a very long time or maybe not at all. Nevertheless, every time we give of ourselves and honor God, we can be sure He is using us for His kingdom.”
