Fifth graders learned the power of proper nutrition during science class on Friday, April 15. Sharon McClellan, a nurse and also mom to three Whitefield graduates, gave the presentation, which focused on these keys to overall health:
1. Eating an abundance of fruits and vegetables;
2. Drinking plenty of water;
3. Getting daily exercise;
4. Getting adequate sleep;
5. Minimizing stress
McClellan taught the students that their bodies are “fearfully and wonderfully made”, that they are God’s masterpiece, and that He has a good purpose for their lives. She also challenged them to be good stewards of their own health because having a healthy body will ensure that they have the strength to accomplish their dreams (and God’s plans) for the future.
“I had such fun being with the kids. They were attentive, interested, and engaged!” said McClellan. “Hopefully they will be interested in eating less McDonald’s, less sugar, less processed foods, and more fruits and vegetables in the future.”
At the end of the discussion, McClellan gave students two homework assignments: 1) to make a list of fruits and vegetables they enjoy; and 2) to shop for healthy foods on their next grocery store trip.
“I am a ‘Mom on a Mission’ working to empower kids and their families to make healthier choices. I love doing these presentations for students, families, and small groups of moms,” said McClellan. McClellan is also a provider of Juice Plus vitamins.
