Whitefield Academy defeated the Baylor Red Raiders in an exciting game that went into double overtime. After falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, Carter Dixon (11th) reminded the WolfPack how to score again in the second period. The game was tied, 4-4, at the half, and, 5-5, at the end of three. The WolfPack had pulled ahead 8-6 with less than 2 minutes in regulation, but the Red Raiders added 2 quick goals to force the first 4 minute overtime. After winning the faceoff, Baylor patiently worked the ball for most of the first OT, but could not get a shot in because of the smothering play of the Whitefield defense and goalie Wills McCutcheon (10th), who made a gutsy decision to step out of the cage for an interception. It was the kind of play that inspired the rest of the WolfPack to make the plays they needed to eventually win the game. Being a man down the Wolfpack remained aggressive and Mitchell Ryan (11th) took the ball down the field at the start of the second overtime taking the Red Raider defense by surprise and creating enough confusion to allow Jonathan Wood (11th) to roll a shot in between two defenders for the winning goal.
The tale of the numbers reads like this: Jonathan for 4 goals, 3 assists; Mitchell for 4 assists; William Charles (12th) for 2 goals; Carter for 2 goals; Jack Charles (10th) for 1 goal); and Connor Callan (11th) for 1 assist.
The defensive game was busy: Connor had 10 GBs and 1 CT, Mitchell had 6 GBs and 1 CT, Wills had 4 GBs, Jonathan and William had 3 GBs each, Jordan Saibu (11th) and Thomas Joiner (10th) each had 1 GB and 1 CT, while Carson Brown (11th), Joseph Schwartz (10th), and Carter each nabbed 1 GB.
Wills was tested heavily by the Red Raiders with 23 shots on goal but prevailed with 15 saves.
The WolfPack (7-1) is back in action this Saturday at 5pm at 6-A Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville. Come see the WolfPack bait the Bears!
