Congratulations to the varsity boys basketball team, who took the WolfPack all the way to the final four this season.  The team, which consisted of six underclassmen, one junior, and three seniors, fought their way through a number of difficult opponents and remained competitive and determined on the court. The season opened with some losses, but the WolfPack began to turn the corner with their play in the Peach State Classic during December. Whitefield advanced to the championship round in that tournament. They eventually lost to Therrell High School, but gained confidence and momentum that carried them into the remaining season. Junior Isaiah Hart finished the championship game with 24 points and senior Brendon Myles finished with 21 points.

In early January, the WolfPack had an outstanding game, defeating Landmark Christian 91-62 with Isaiah and Brendon leading as top scorers with a combined total of 64 points (Isaiah-30; Brendon–34). A week later the team avenged their earlier loss against St Francis by defeating them 75- 73.  Once again, the team leaders Isaiah and Brendon rose to the occasion to put significant points on the board. Isaiah dropped 37 points and Brendon finished the game with 25 points. The WolfPack defeated King’s Ridge 60-47 in a rematch with Brendon, Isaiah, and Jimmy McCarthy leading the team in scoring.  It was after these two games that the Marietta Daily Journal named Isaiah as Athlete of the Week.

Although Whitefield suffered two back-to-back losses in early February, they played exceptionally well against Dothan High School and McEachern High School, both 6A top 10 opponents. Whitefield lost in overtime to both teams, falling to Dothan by only eight points and to McEachern by only three points.

In post season play, the WolfPack advanced to the first round of the state playoffs, where Whitefield defeated Kings Ridge 56 – 55 in a thriller to advance to the Elite Eight.  Whitefield defeated Lakeview Academy, 59 – 39, at Kennesaw State University and advanced to the final four, where they were defeated by St. Francis.

Throughout the season, Isaiah and Brendon were both amazing scorers; each finished as one of the top ten scores of Cobb County. Brendon also finished second in rebounds in Cobb County with an average of 11.2 rebounds per game. Both players were also chosen to the 6A Region Fist Team.

Tyrone Johnson, Whitefield’s varsity boys basketball coach was encouraged by the 2016 season.  The team, largely comprised of underclassmen, learned to work together and achieve success through consistent practice and determined play.

“I have been truly blessed to coach several outstanding teams in the 15 years that I have been at Whitefield Academy,” said Johnson. “However, this year’s team holds a special place in my heart.  They completely maxed out on their ability and enjoyed a level of success that seemed improbable and unlikely at the beginning of the season.  They are remarkable young men, and I am humbled that God gave me the opportunity to coach them.”
