When the second and final day of the Georgia Area 6A Private School Region Track Meet was finished at Mt. Pisgah yesterday, the Whitefield boys carried home the team championship trophy. With strong performances in virtually every event, the boys team point tally of 176 points was more than double that of runner-up North Cobb Christian. The WolfPack girls ended up with a solid fourth place finish, thanks to a strong Day 2 on the track.
The boys advanced numerous individuals and relay teams to the sectional meet to be held at Landmark Christian on Saturday, May 2. The boys 4x100m relay team (juniors Ajani Kerr and Evan Johnson, sophomore Brian Pickens and senior Brandon Morris) led off by capturing first place and tying their own school record time of 43.91. Individual sprint qualifiers included Brandon (third in both the 100m and the 200m dash), and Brian and Evan, who went 1-2 in the 400m dash. Senior Robby Keough and junior Adonis Cole went 1-2 in the 800m run. Ajani also qualified in both hurdle events (first in the 300m hurdles and second in the 110m hurdles). Freshmen Brooks Merkle and Nicholas Harris qualified directly to the state final in the 3200m run, by finishing third and fourth; their state championship race will take place in Jefferson, GA on Friday, May 15. The boys capped off a great day by qualifying two 4x400 relay teams (the A team of Brian, senior Norman Harris, Evan, and Robby won the event in 3:35.08 and the B team of sophomore Isaiah Hart, junior Jordan Greer, Adonis and Brandon took second place).
The girls will also be sending several runners to the sectional meet. The 4x100m relay team of sophomore Kaitlin Johnson, juniors Corey Johnson and Sydney Wingate, and freshman Ro Malone took runner-up honors in this first event of the day. Corey won the region championship in the 400m and sophomore Kate Taylor ran a PR time of 2:39 to finish third in the 800m run. In the 100m dash, freshmen Laren Vanarsdale and Ro finished third and fourth, and Laren also added a third place finish in the 200m dash. Sydney also advanced with a fourth place in the 300m hurdles. The girls 4x400m relay of Kate, Sydney, Corey and Laren punctuated the day with a solid third place finish.
All in all, it was a tremendous performance by the WolfPack boys and girls, who now begin preparation for sectionals. Go WolfPack!
