Whitefield Academy welcomes Quinn F. Gray Sr. as head coach of WolfPack football. Quinn has spent the last four years leading the Florida A&M University quarterbacks and two years as the Rattler’s offensive coordinator in Tallahassee, Fla. Gray brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership skills from the NCAA ranks.
“We are honored to have Quinn join our team and know he will be an incredible asset as we continue to build our program. He has a proven ability to develop players and recognize their strengths both on and off the field,” said Whitefield Athletic Director Lynn Dupree.
After six years playing in the NFL, Gray made his coaching debut at Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Fla. in 2010. In addition to a robust resume, Gray’s appointment as head coach came with sterling recommendations, including one from mentor and Detroit Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell, who Gray interned under during his Bill Walsh National Football League Minority Coaching Fellowship last summer.
Former Atlanta Falcon and father of four Whitefield Academy alumni, Wallace Francis, said, “I welcome Coach Gray to the Whitefield family. He has played at the highest level in football and understands the importance of academic excellence as well as personal character, which will help mold our young athletes into true winners.”
Prior to honing his leadership skills as a high school and college coach, Gray attended nationally-known football powerhouse Dillard High School, where he earned a number of accolades over his high school career as a member of the school’s varsity basketball and baseball teams. He continued his education at FAMU, where he lettered in football for four years and still holds the all-career passing records at the University. Gray was also named to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference First Team and honored as the 2001 MEAC Player of the Year by the 100% Club of Washington, D.C. In 2001 Gray led FAMU to one of numerous Black College National Championships. After his senior season, he received the 2002 A.S. Jake Gaither Award given to the most valuable player.
“This has been a long season for my family and me, and I believe that God had this whole process in his hands. I am truly ecstatic about being a part of the Whitefield family and can't wait to get started.” said Gray.
Gray’s ambition and determination stems largely from his father, Coach Otis Gray, Jr., a highly respected coach whose notable accomplishments include multiple Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald Coach of the Year awards as well as a NFL High School Coach of the Year nomination. As a high school coach, Gray’s father led current University of Georgia head coach Mark Richt.
Gray is married to the former Ms. Shemeka Pittman and has four children Quine’, Quinn Jr., Ashton, and Londyn and two step-children, Destiny and David.
The WolfPack will kick off the 2015 season against Mount Paran Christian School in August.
