Whitefield’s track & field teams got their seasons off to a great start on Saturday, hosting five other teams for the Whitefield Opener. Visiting teams included Bremen, George Walton Academy, Providence Christian, Mount Paran Christian, and Lovett. The WolfPack boys won the team competition with 184 points, edging out Bremen at 160. Whitefield’s girls team finished in fourth place.
Our boys and girls both feature deep sprinting talent and both led off with wins in the 4x100 relay events. The girls team of junior Corey Johnson, sophomore Kaitlyn Johnson, freshman Laren VanArsdale, and junior Sidney Wingate won with a time of 53:09. The boys team of juniors Jordan Edge and Ajani Kerr, senior Brandon Morris and sophomore Brian Pickens took top honors with a time of 45.77.
Despite windy conditions, senior Robby Keough won the 1600m run in a time of 4:20.21 (currently the fifth fastest 1600m time in the United States at this early stage of the 2015 season). Robby followed up with a win in the 800m run. Brian won the 400m dash in 52.51, followed by teammate junior Evan Johnson in second place. Ajani won the 110m hurdles in a time of 17:48 and the Whitefield trio of Brandon, Brian, and Ajani swept the 200m dash. Brandon, senior Marcus Jones, and Evan finished second, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump. Sophomore Carson Brown showed his versatility, with second place finishes in the discus and shot put and a third place finish in the 300m hurdles. In the final event of the day, the Whitefield boys 4x400 relay team won by a wide margin over the other teams, with a time of 3:38.68. The relay team consisted of Brian, Brandon, Ajani, and Robby.
The girls captured significant points in the 100m dash with second, third, and fourth place finishes by Laren, Ro Malone (9th) and Kaitlin, respectively. Lauren also took second place honors in the long jump and in the 200m dash, where she was joined by Ro (third place), Kaitlyn (fifth place) and Corey (eighth place). Sidney contributed additional points with a third place finish in the 300m hurdles and a fourth place finish in the 100m hurdles.
