Senior Robby Keough signed a declaration of intent to run indoor and outdoor track for the University of Virginia (UVA) on November 12, National Signing Day. Keough has been a member of Whitefield’s varsity cross-country and track & field teams since his freshman year and continues to excel as a runner. This season, he placed second in the state cross-country championship and second at the Mercy Invitational, an accomplishment for which he earned Private School 1A Runner of The Week from GeorgiaMilesplit.com. Keough also won two state championships in the spring of 2014, in both the 800m and 1600m, just days apart.
“We are very excited to add Robby to the team,” said Peter Watson, assistant track and field coach at UVA. “During the recruiting process I was very impressed with the way he carried himself and how clear he was when expressing his desire to become a great miler."
Keough was attracted to UVA because of their top-tier business school and the fact that their distance running team is a fairly small group of 15 to 16 runners, giving him an opportunity to be part of a cohesive unit rather than a huge squad. He hopes to run cross-country with the team in the future also.
“I expect Robby to come in and contribute to our middle distance group right away. He has shown the ability to win races in high school and that is important to me when I’m recruiting athletes,” continued Watson. “He hit it off well with the guys on the team during his visit and we are excited to have him with us next year.
