Juniors and seniors dressed in their finest to attend this year’s prom, an evening of celebration and fun held at The Buckhead Theatre. Originally opened in 1931, The Buckhead Theatre sits at the gateway to one of Atlanta’s most vibrant communities. With the theme “A Night in the City,” the restored Spanish-Baroque architecture of this classic movie house was the perfect venue for the evening.

Students arriving in Buckhead were welcomed by a bright marquee announcing, “Whitefield Prom 2013.”  As students entered the theater in tuxes and shimmering long gowns, they were welcomed by a red carpet lined with flickering votive candles. The main event was held on the second floor of the theatre with beautiful exposed brick walls lined with huge windows which overlooked the popular neighborhood.

The juniors and seniors made their way upstairs for a night of dancing in a spacious room with comfortable seating for conversations, highboy tables for snacking and chatting, and a hardwood dance floor. A live DJ entertained the crowd as they danced as couples, as friends, and as a group, gathering together to perform The Cupid Shuffle and The Wobble dance.

“Growing up girls always dream about prom and how special its supposed to be,” said Grace Miller (11th). Prom for me definitely lived up to the expectations. The whole night was amazing.”

Students enjoyed a candy bar with M&Ms, Skittles, gourmet jelly beans, and gummy bears, as well as Cami cakes, brownies, and a Whitefield “signature punch” of Sprite, grenadine, and cherries.

“My favorite thing was going to dinner together and dancing with all my friends,” said Sophie Kemether (11th). “It was fun to be together as a grade and just enjoy our friendships.”

Special thanks to Stephanie Moseley, Whitefield advancement office

manager, who organized the prom with the help of her prom committee of junior girls: Cassie Clementi, Hannah Hill, Katie Kassis, Alli Matthews, Mary Beth Newkirk, and Annie Sickling.

“I enjoyed working together with a group of close friends to make sure this year’s prom was a success,” said Cassie.

“The girls came up with the theme and really helped me figure out what their classmates would enjoy,” added Moseley “I’m very grateful for their insight and help.”

Inspired by a leadership conference a few years ago, Senior Bella Pefianco began the Whitefield Girl Talk chapter which meets every Wednesday morning. Bella’s additional involvement with the ADDO Institute has trained her as a leader in her generation. The Institute derived its name from ADDO, the Latin verb for inspire, and holds yearly ADDO Gatherings with motivational speakers for high school students, partners with Chick-fil-A to train leaders, and sponsors study abroad programs through the University of Georgia. Here is Bella’s story.

A couple of summers ago, I read an article about a one-day youth leadership conference that was being held in Atlanta. I was reluctant to attend at first but after reading the keynote speaker list, I was intrigued. Former Coach Vince Dooley, and former KSU President, Dr. Betty Siegel were among the speakers to headline the event. I asked a couple of my friends to go with me and finally convinced someone to take a day out of their lazy summer and accompany me to the conference. We had no expectations really, other than to have fun and enjoy the speakers. At the end of the day, several hundred students walked away from the conference inspired and ready to make an impact on their communities. I was certainly one of them.

One speaker, in particular, caught my interest - Haley Kilpatrick. Haley founded “Girl Talk,” a mentoring program designed for high school to mentor middle school girls and help them navigate through the confusing and awkward years of life. From Haley’s own difficult personal middle school experience, she decided to become a part of the solution. Since I had been a small group leader for a group of middle school girls at my church for a few years, I recognized the value in the Girl Talk program and saw a need at Whitefield to have a more organized student-to-student mentoring program specifically for girls. One month later, after getting approval from Whitefield administrators, our Girl Talk Chapter was formed. I put a call out for high school mentors, expecting to get only a couple of volunteers, and surprisingly got an overwhelming response with a superfluous amount of applicants. For the past two years we have met for breakfast every Wednesday morning with eighth-grade girls and have discussed topics such as bullying, finding quality friends, dating, being a good friend to others, and how to handle being left out.

As a group, we have become involved in several community service projects and have raised money by hosting bake sales at local events and selling homemade apple pies at Thanksgiving. We collected cleaning supplies for a local homeless women's and children’s shelter and wrote letters to soldiers serving overseas. These service projects have helped remind us all that sometimes our own problems are less important than others; and taking a small part of time out of our day can make a big difference in someone’s life. They also aided in creating a healthy bond among the middle school girls and the high school mentors – a bond that the Girl Talk program undoubtedly strives to build.

Recently, I was given the privilege to present my senior service project at chapel. I looked back at where my inspiration came from and it loops back to that first ADDO Gathering. It was there that I realized by taking one small step out of my comfort zone that I had the ability to make a difference in my community. One quote that really inspired me to take action came from the ADDO Conference speaker Ike Reighard.   He said, “Your choices today equal your lifestyle tomorrow. I want you to get up in the morning and realize that you can make a difference.”

I am so grateful to the ADDO Institute for their vision and their desire to inspire today for impact tomorrow. I am also thankful to Whitefield, my fellow high school mentors, and all the Middle School girls who have participated. As I graduate this May, I hope I leave them with the knowledge that they have the power to make a difference in their community.

The Middle School baseball team won the semi-finals of the Dunwoody League Tournament against Galloway. The game started with Galloway scoring three runs in the top of the first on an error and three singles. The Pack battled back in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on three hits including a two-run homerun by Sam Fuller (8th). The Pack added to the lead in the second inning, scoring two runs on two doubles by Mason Jones (8th) and Casey Bowman (7th) to take a 6-3 lead.

Galloway came back in the third inning, scoring two runs on an error and a double. In the bottom of the third Sam Fuller led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Lewis (7th). At the end of the fourth inning the Pack was up 7-5 thanks to good pitching by the starter Mason Jones and the relief pitcher Casey. The fifth inning saw lots of scoring with Galloway scoring three runs on two hits and an error to take an 8-7 lead.

The Pack battled back again, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jimmy McCarthy started the inning with a single and Sam Fuller drove him in with a double to the left field fence. Griffin Combs (8th) was hit by a pitch followed by a single by Jake Lewis and a Jack Fitzgerald walk loaded the bases. Coleman Miller (7th) drove in one run with a single and then Thomas Joiner (7th) drove in two runs with a double. The Pack took an 11-8 lead going into the sixth inning.

Casey was still pitching. The inning did not start well for the Pack, the first batter was safe on a drop third strike and then the second batter walked. Galloway laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners to third and second base. Both base runners scored on a pass ball and a throwing error. Casey struck out a batter and then walked two more before being pulled because of injury. Sam struck out the next Galloway batter leaving the tying run on first base and preserving the WolfPack victory with a final score of 11-10.

The Middle School lacrosse team improved its overall record to 12-4 this past week and secured the third seed and home field advantage for the upcoming AMSLL playoffs.  The WolfPack traveled to Mt. Paran on Tuesday afternoon for two league games against the Eagles and the St. Pius Golden Lions. After slow starts in both games, the WolfPack found the back of the net more often and cruised to a 13-6 victory over the Eagles and a 10-4 victory over the Golden Lions.  Preston Bates (8th) and Mitchell Ryan (8th) both netted two goals in the games.  Josh Turner (8th) and Robert Matherne (6th) also contributed goals, while Sid Brendel (8th) led all scorers with nine goals and three assists.

On Saturday, the team traveled to Kennesaw for games against the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs and the Fellowship Christian Paladins.  The WolfPack jumped out to a quick lead against the Mustangs and never looked back.  Josh, Mitchell, and Camden Evans (6th) each contributed goals, while Bradley Washington (8th), Wills McCutcheon (7th), and Noah Howard (6th) turned in solid goalie play en route to a 14-2 victory. The WolfPack squared off against the Paladins in the second game of the day, seeking to avenge a loss earlier in the season. Whitefield dominated on ground balls, time of possession, and shots, but the Paladins kept the game close throughout, never letting the WolfPack get up by more than two goals.  Late in the fourth quarter, the Paladins capitalized on a series of penalties and rang up three quick man up goals to secure a 5-4 win over the WolfPack.

With the three wins this week, the lacrosse team has compiled an 11-3 league record and secured a bye in the first round of the playoffs. The team will host Blessed Trinity on Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. at the Whitefield stadium. One more win will earn the WolfPack a berth in the Final Four tournament to be held on Saturday at Whitefield stadium.  Let's go Pack!

The Pack won the Dunwoody League Championship on Monday night, April 22. The first inning saw great defense by the Pack, the lead-off batter for Ridgeview reached on a single and then was picked off first by pitcher Jimmy McCarthy (8th). After giving up another single the Pack turned a double play on a ball back to the pitcher. The Pack could not score in the bottom of the first even though Jacob Pitts (7th) and Jimmy had singles.

The second inning saw Ridgeview jump out to a 4-0 lead, the big hit was a triple to drive in two runs. Jake Lewis (7th) led off the bottom of the second with a triple and scored on a single by Griffin Combs (8th). The third inning found the Pack down 4-1. Ridgeview added a run in the third on two singles and a walk to take a 5-1 lead.  The Pack came back in the bottom of third with 2 runs, Jacob singled and Sam Fuller (8th) hit a towering home run to left field. Sam came in to pitch in relief of Jimmy and held Ridgeview scoreless in the fourth inning.

Jack Fitzgerald (8th) hit a double in the bottom of the fourth and scored after a throwing error by Ridgeview on a hit by Coleman Miller (7th), Jacob drove in Coleman and the Pack was tied going into the 5th inning. Sam walked two and struck out three batters in the 5th to keep the score tied, the Pack could do nothing in the bottom of the 5th and the score remained tied.

The sixth inning saw a great defensive play by West Peterson

(6th) on a line drive double play, the Pack again went three up three down and the game went to the 7th inning tied. Ridgeview started the 7th with a fly out to Jack in center, the next batter reached when he was hit by a pitch, the Pack then got some help on a double play when the runner interfered with the defense and was called out.  The Pack needed to score one run in the bottom of the 7th to win the game.  Coleman singled and Russell Bell (6th) was brought in to run for him, Russell stole second and was driven to third on a single by Jacob. Jimmy came to the plate with one out and a runner on 1st and 3rd and singled to center field to drive in the winning run.

Commencement services will be Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. at Mount Paran Church. Reverend R.V. Brown, president of Outreach to America’s Youth, will give the keynote address.

“In 20 years of teaching and leading young people, as well as watching other schools around Atlanta do the same, I am convinced you will not find another school outside of Whitefield Academy that graduates a group of alumni with a stronger combination of strength of intellect, maturity in Christ, and diversity of giftedness,” said interim headmaster Dr. Kevin Bracher.

“I am humbled and honored to stand amongst this class of 2013, shake their hands, and welcome them as we shift our relationship from that of headmaster/student to mentor/friend," he added.

Joining Brown and Bracher at the podium will be valedictorian and Georgia Tech incoming freshman Holt Merkle; and salutatorian and future University of Georgia scholar Morgan Landers.

“The days ahead are bittersweet,” continued Bracher. “These students are the heartbeat of Whitefield, and we cherish our time with each and every one of them. We look to the future, though, with excitement as we welcome over 75 new families who join us in the fall, and celebrate the traditions that define our covenant community.”

Russell Bell (6th) played for Whitefield's Middle School baseball team this year, a championship team! He had a blast hanging out with friends and learning how to improve his game from WolfPack coaches. Here's his experience in his own words:

Playing on a Middle School team is one of the most exciting things you could ever do in your Middle School experience. This year I played on Whitefield Academy’s sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade baseball team. I suggest that everyone in Middle School tries to play on a sports team because you will learn a lot from the older guys on the team and have a blast!

Being on our baseball team, I got to know and become friends with lots of seventh and eighth graders that I might not have known otherwise. My experience was unique because I got to play more than I thought I would. I played in the outfield and enjoyed it very much. There was always support for me and the other players from one another and from the coaches.

The championship game was a lot of fun. We were tied up coming into the last inning. I was the  pinch runner for my teammate Coleman Miller. It was really exciting because I was the one who scored the winning run!

My teammates laugh because when I’m pinch running I like to stare down the catcher until he throws the ball to first base. I stare him down then take off running for second base. That day I was on first base, staring down the catcher as usual. Jacob Pitts hit a single and I took off for second base. Next Jimmy McCarthy, one of the eighth-graders, hit a single into right field to score me and we won the game!

Sam Fuller, another one of the eighth-graders, came out and hugged me for scoring the winning run. Everyone was celebrating. After the game, we all went out onto the field and got our winning T-shirts. Then we celebrated with Dunkin’ Donuts – which was delicious! This week we are going to get together for a real celebration at one of my teammate’s houses.
