Whitefield Seniors Michael Baldwin and Ethan Powell shown on far right with Mr. Okie

Several Whitefield music students were recently featured in local worship services during the Easter season.

Seniors Ethan Powell and Michael Baldwin were both hired to play trumpet and cello, respectively, and lend their voices to the music at Dunwoody Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Okie serves as the worship director. Leading the congregation through Easter classics such as “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” and “I Know that My Redeemer Lives,” Ethan and Michael were tasked with interpreting orchestral parts for each song. The trumpet in particular played a featured “descant” on several of the songs. In addition, both students sang tenor and bass, respectively, on the great English choral anthem “This Joyful Eastertide.”

After the service, the pastor and congregants showed their appreciation for the unique instrumental flourishes in this special service and the choral prelude.

The students also appreciated the opportunity. Michael remarked, “I really enjoy the opportunity to worship through my instrument.” He also noted that he enjoyed playing traditional hymns because they had such great instrumental parts that were fun to play.

Seventh-grader Howard Allen played a featured saxophone solo at First Christ Cares Church. His family and congregation were thrilled with the performance, and Howard also appreciated the opportunity to edify his church body with his musical talents.

These students also have Whitefield mentors who have encouraged them in their gigging. Mrs. Quiros, band teacher and fine arts director, and Mr. Okie, choir teacher, have both lent their talents to Easter services for years. We are especially proud of the public performances by talented and enterprising Whitefield students which underline that talents should be shared to benefit others. One does not need to be a “professional musician” to experience the joy of playing music and worshipping through these musical offerings.

On April 30, 12 members of the Whitefield AP Computer Science class attended the annual AP Bowl held at Georgia Tech. The competition, which involves taking a test similar to the multiple choice portion of the AP Computer Science exam, drew a field of 162 students from metro-Atlanta high schools.

For the second straight year, a Whitefield student finished in first place. Sophomore Donovan Pearce was the only student to earn a perfect score as he correctly answered all 40 questions on the exam. Caleb Corliss, Sarah Davis, and Dani Streever each scored 37/40 to finish in a tie for fourth place.

Last week started with exciting victories for our Middle School soccer teams, as both boys and girls claimed the Metro10 championship titles! Congratulations to both teams on great seasons! WolfPup athletes also got in on the action last week, as 75 third- through sixth-grade students competed at the annual Perimeter Track Meet on Friday.

On Thursday we celebrated the senior athletes that will be competing in college athletics next year. The gym floor was filled, as 21 percent of our graduating class signed to compete in softball, football, swimming, basketball, soccer, baseball, track, and lacrosse. For pictures from this event and more information on the plans of these 14 athletes, click here. Congratulations to these seniors and their families! Thank you for your contribution to WolfPack athletics over the years. Even as you take on new colors and mascots, you’ll always be a part of the Pack, and we’ll always be rooting for you!

Boys varsity soccer continued in their quest for a state championship on Wednesday, defeating Aquinas in the second round of playoffs, and competing on Saturday in the quarterfinal round against Atlanta International School. Saturday’s game was a white out for WolfPack fans, and the team ultimately brought home a 1-0 victory. You can find the bracket for this tournament here. The Pack will compete again in the final four on Tuesday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at home against Hebron Christian.

This week, varsity track and field will be taking 13 athletes to Berry College to compete in the GHSA state meet. The WolfPack will be competing in 12 events; read more about the athletes who have qualified here. We’ll also begin tryouts for some of our fall sports, including varsity softball and JV and varsity volleyball.

As the school year begins to wrap up and we have the opportunity to think through some of the highlights from this year, I’m again reminded of the many parents that have put in countless hours to ensure that things run smoothly throughout the year. Thank you for volunteering to run scoreboards, keep books, serve in the concession stands, coordinate on behalf of coaches, and creatively encourage our athletes. Whitefield athletics truly could not function without you! Thank you for enabling our coaches and athletes to spend their time focused on their sport, and thank you for tirelessly cheering them on as they do. You are a key part of the WolfPack team, and we’re so grateful for you!

The 2016-17 athletic year has officially come to a close, and what a finish it was! The varsity track and varsity boys soccer teams completed their seasons last week, competing in state championships.

Congratulations to Carson Brown for earning third place and setting a personal best throwing discus, to Devin Wade for claiming sixth place in the 3200m, and to Emily Little for taking sixth in the 3200m! On the last day of the state track meet, the boys 4x100 meter relay team took second, Brian Pickens took third in the 100 meter dash, and the boys team finished fourth overall in the state, one of the top finishes ever for that program. Great job, Pack!

Perhaps the most exciting moment of our entire athletic year was Friday’s varsity boys soccer victory when the WolfPack claimed the GHSA boys soccer state championship! This season has been history-making for the WolfPack soccer program. After an awesome victory for the varsity boys on Tuesday in the final four of the GHSA state tournament, we prepared for Friday’s state championship game against Walker. The team was sent off on Friday morning by our Middle School students and was soon followed by three fan buses holding over 100 Upper School students. It was an intense game with big crowds from both schools, but the Pack was ultimately able to walk away with a 2-1 victory and the state championship trophy! Congratulations on an amazing season, varsity boys! We’ve loved cheering you on and watching all of your hard work pay off throughout this season.

Thank you, WolfPack athletes, fans, and parents for your incredible support throughout this school year. Your commitment to our teams has made an immeasurable difference. We’re looking forward to cheering on the Pack with you in the future!

Boys Track and Field Team Captures Fourth at StateBoys Track and Field Team Captures Fourth at State

The Whitefield boys track team finished their 2017 season at the state meet at Berry College in Rome on Saturday, May 13, with an unexpected team trophy and fourth-place finish in the GHSA 1A private competition. Based on seeding and entry times, the team had been projected to finish 11th with 19 points, but as a result of some outstanding personal record performances, they surprised themselves and others by scoring 36 points, just one to three points ahead of four other teams vying for the fourth-place trophy!

In track, the top eight finishers in an event all score points that add to the team's total. Freshman Devin Wade started Whitefield's team scoring on Thursday night by beating his personal best time by more than 20 seconds with a 10:22.96 and moving from an 11th seed to sixth-place in the 3200 meter run. On Friday, senior Carson Brown finished out a stellar career at Whitefield by placing third in the discus and seventh in the shot put. Then, junior Nicholas Harris, who was the last qualifier in the triple jump at sectionals, surpassed his personal best by more than two feet and finished third, setting a new school record of 43'4" in the process.

On Saturday, the 4x100 meter relay team of Nicholas Harris, senior Willie Fulks, sophomore Julian Munoz, and senior Brian Pickens picked up where their teammates left off by finishing second with a season-best time of 43.37. Brian, who anchored the 4x100 meter relay team with a blazing finish, completed the best meet of his Whitefield career by going from an eighth-place seed in the 400 meter to finishing third with a season-best time of 51.04. Our final competitor, senior sprinter Willie Fulks, finished out his excellent career at Whitefield by placing fourth in the 100 meter with a personal-best time of 11.10.

The Whitefield girls track team also completed their season at state by experiencing both elation and disappointment. Freshman Emily Little scored points and was on the podium twice for the Lady WolfPack by finishing sixth in the 3200 meter on Thursday night and eighth in the 1600 meter on Friday night. However, the disappointment came on Saturday. Our 4x100 meter team of freshman Logan VanArsdale, sophomore Shelby Wingate, senior Kaitlyn Johnson, and sophomore Amilya Little, which had been seeded second coming out of sectionals, inadvertently dropped the baton and finished eighth. However, Shelby Wingate brought the girls team back by placing sixth in the 100 meter in a personal-best time of 12.53.

Thank you to all of this year's seniors - Carson Brown, Brian Pickens, Willie Fulks, and Kaitlyn Johnson - for their leadership and the legacy they have left for their teammates to follow. The coaches, track parents, and teammates are all proud of you!

Seniors to Pursue Arts after WhitefieldSeniors to Pursue Arts after Whitefield

Seven members of the Class of 2017 will continue to pursue their passion for the arts after they graduate Whitefield this month. While some students see the arts as an extracurricular activity, this group of seniors sees it as a way of life.

• Jessica Burnett – University of Tampa, majoring in musical theatre

"I loved that the [University of Tampa] musical theatre students were warm and welcoming to prospective students and that they were really a family within the larger student community. UTampa also encourages their performing arts students to minor in something that pairs well with performing arts, like arts management, marketing, communications, or education, because they want their musical theatre students to be able to do more than just be good singers, dancers, and actors. My biggest dream is to be able to continue performing for as long as I can. I also hope that I might be able to teach or coach high school students who also love theatre.

All the Whitefield drama students are so amazing and passionate, and being around them made me more driven to continue to perform in college. Without them, I doubt that I would be continuing in musical theatre at all."

• Brittany Crisp – American Academy of Dramatic Arts

"AADA is a conservatory strictly for actors who intend on pursuing [an acting career] professionally. They will train me in the art of acting for stage and screen, and, afterwards, the college will give me the connections I need in order to continue my career as a professional actress in Los Angeles. I've been acting since I was nine years old, and it's been my creative passion ever since. Thankfully for me, God let me know what He wanted me to do with my life at a young age. I'm so grateful for teachers like Ms. Marsh and Ms. Bonnem, who not only support my dreams, but encourage me when I have self-doubt in my skills and abilities. If it wasn't for their love, God, and the family environment that I experienced with my drama family, I know I wouldn't have had the confidence to pursue my dreams for real."

• Ansley Guthrie – Parsons School of Design, focusing on visual arts

“I am attending an art school because I believe those that are best at their job love their job, and I love art. I want to be the best artist I can be because I value communicating well with the world around me. Creating communicable work is a passion of mine. Good stories are so powerful, and art is my gift in communication. I will find a career that utilizes as many of my artistic passions as possible.”

• Samara Huggins – Pratt Institute, majoring in fashion design and minoring in literary arts

“I elected the fashion design major primarily because that is where my heart is, but also because I have a gifted eye for garments and how they complement the human form. Along with fashion design, writing is my safe haven. I exist to share stories, to express emotions, and to offer advice. I exist to write what I feel, to write what you feel, and to write what the world feels, but cannot say. At Pratt, the literary arts minor matches these interests seamlessly. I will be able to enhance my poetic voice, as well as venture into different genres of creative writing as a student within this department. During my years at Pratt and beyond,  I will combine my creativity, my literary voice, and my passion for foreign cultures by venturing abroad to third-world countries and volunteering as a teacher of either the arts or of the English language or of both, where I would educate children.”

• Kaitlyn Johnson – Berklee College of Music

“I chose Berklee because I have always had a love for music and because of my many years of musical education. Personally, I've always been driven to excel in my musical talents. At Whitefield, I was influenced mostly by Mrs. Quiros, the band director for marching and jazz bands, in both of which I played the piano and had various opportunities to sing. She encouraged me to be the musician I am today, and I am forever grateful!”

• Olivia Nandkeolyar – Wake Forest University, majoring in international relations and minoring in dance. She will also be participating in the university’s performance dance group.

Currently, Olivia practices about 20 hours a week of classical and contemporary ballet as part of a pre-professional program at the International City School of Ballet.  She has competed several times at Youth America Grand Prix, the largest ballet competition for young dancers in the world. The ensemble of which she was a part won first place at the regional competition in Atlanta in January 2017 and competed in the finals in New York City in April against 87 other ensembles representing 23 states and 10 countries.

• Dani Streever – Cornell University, majoring in engineering. Will be taking a gap year after graduating Whitefield to perform with Ballet Chicago during their 2017-2018 season.

Dani has been in a pre-professional ballet program since the age of 11 and has performed in lead and secondary roles in dozens of ballets, such as Carmen, The Nutcracker, Pirates of the Phantom Waves, Paquita, Don Quixote, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake. Dani has danced every summer since the age of 12 at top ballet companies in the U.S., such as Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet West, and Sarasota Cuban Ballet and has been offered summer and year-round ballet scholarships, including a scholarship to dance in Italy and Barcelona, Spain. She has performed and won first place in an ensemble piece in the Youth American Grand Prix. She is greatly looking forward to a year dedicated to ballet.

Congratulations to these seniors for pursuing their dreams…and their creativity…in college and beyond!
