Whitefield administrators, faculty, students, and staff gathered together on Thursday, March 28, for an All-School Chapel celebrating Easter and the risen Savior. Members of the senior class escorted Lower School students into the LSSAC, an annual tradition honoring the heritage of Whitefield Academy and its ongoing mission to rear "young people who go on to college and life with a passion for learning, for others ahead of self, and for the living and active Jesus."
The service began with worship music led by Jeff Horner, Upper School History Chair. Students led responsive readings focusing on the life given every believer because of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Vincent Thomas, youth pastor at Faith Christian Center in Smyrna, presented the message, encouraging the Whitefield community to continue living a life of service and commitment to the Lord.
Middle School Principal Dr. Ron Farrar closed out the service with a word of prayer and the Whitefield orchestra played the closing music as every student adorned a wooden cross with beautiful flowers representing the resurrection. The crosses, whose wooden frames were built by the Whitefield Boy Scout troop, were a beautiful illustration of how Christ brought us from death to life through the cross.
A highlight of the service was special guest Steve Penley, one of the most celebrated artists in America, who is best known for his vibrant paintings. A great friend of Whitefield, Penley painted a portrait of Jesus Christ while students filled the crosses with flowers. Beginning with a few strokes of yellow acrilyc, Penley brought the spirit of the cross alive as he completed his piece and painted the loving and caring face of Christ.
Following the service, Penley spoke to Upper School art students about his craft and life while painting additional pieces.
