The WolfPack track and field teams traveled to Landmark Christian School on Saturday, April 26, for the Class 1A sectional meet, with berths in the state championship meets at stake for the top eight finishers in each event.
The boys got things off to a great start in the field events, with two of our boys advancing to the state meet. Senior Austin Joseph finished seventh in the triple jump, with a leap of 40’7½” and senior Jaylen Hudson finished seventh in the shot put, with a throw of 42’3½” .
Starring for the girls, senior Alice Fugate advanced to the state finals in both the 100m dash (finishing seventh with a time of 12.78) and the 200m dash (finishing eighth, in a PR time of 26.28). Alice will be Whitefield’s lone representative at the girls state championships in Albany, GA from May 1-3. Due to injury, junior Naomy Grand'Pierre was unable to compete in the 800m run at Saturday’s sectionals and will not be able defend her state title in the 1600m, despite having qualified for the final in that event with her performance at the area meet two weeks ago.
In the boys running events, the 4x100 relay team led things off in impressive fashion, finishing in sixth place with a time of 44.59, and advancing to state. In the process, the boys set a new Whitefield record, eclipsing the old mark of 44.68. The relay team consisted of Jordan Edge (10th), Evan Johnson (10th), JB Johnson (12th), and Brandon Morris (11th). In addition to his role on the 4x100 relay team, Brandon had a great day in the sprints, setting a new Whitefield record of 11.28 in the 100m dash (bettering the old mark of 11.29) and achieving a new PR in the 200m run (23.07). Junior Robby Keough took top honors in the 800m run, with a time of 1:56.84. Robby advances to the state finals in both the 800m and 1600m runs, and is the top seed in Georgia Class 1A in both events. Freshman Brian Pickens came up just short of qualifying for state in the 400m dash, finishing ninth with a PR time of 51.91. Austin, Jaylen, Robby and the 4x100 relay team will represent Whitefield at the state championships in Jefferson, GA from May 8 – 10.
Congratulations to all of the boys and girls on Whitefield’s track and field teams and best wishes to our athletes in the Georgia state championships over the next two weeks!
