Congratulations to Whitefield’s Upper School drama class, who recently won third place for their presentation of "The Curious Savage" by John Patrick in the GHSA One-Act competition. Chase Butler won "All-Star Cast Member" while Hannah Rae Faulk won "Best Actress" for the entire competition. Nine schools participated from the 9A region.

Produced by special arrangement through Dramatic Play Service, “The Curious Savage” is the story of Mrs. Fred Savage, a slightly eccentric, extremely wealthy widow, played by Mary Hannah Skelton. A humorous and entertaining exploration of human behavior, the story unfolds as Mrs. Savage tries todecide how to spend her inheritance from her late husband. Her greedy children, Titus (played by Chase Butler), Lily Belle (played by Hannah Rae Faulk), and Samuel (played by William Bell), are determined to make sure they receive the inheritance.

However, Mrs. Savage refuses to cooperate with her stepchildren’s demands. Much to their chagrin, she puts her wealth into negotiable bonds in the hopes of establishing a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams. Determined to prove her crazy and hold on to “their” money, the stepchildren commit Mrs. Savage to a sanatorium in the hopes of shocking her back to her senses. Instead she meets a group of misfits including Fairy May (played by Art Christofferson), Florence (played by Kathryn Bracher), Hannibal (played by Matt Snyder), Jeffrey (played by Juan Darby), and Mrs. Paddy (played by Kayla Reeder). The perfectly sane Mrs. Savage falls in love with these patients, who are bogged down by their own painful and difficult personal issues. With the help of Dr. Emmett (played by Janie Hampel) and Miss Willie, a nurse played by Jennie Chambliss, Mrs. Savage leads her children on a merry chase for the money.

“The Curious Savage” contrasts the greedy, self-centered personalities of Mrs. Savage’s stepchildren with the kind and gentle hearts of the sanatorium’s patients. The question presented to audiences everywhere is: “Who are the crazy ones, really?”

Special thanks to the Production Team and the other cast members who worked on props, costumes, lighting, and set-design: Camila Beltran, Kristen Fikse, Naomy Grand'Pierre, Grace Langella, Jana Patton, Jonathan Thomas, and Walker Wood.
