Members of the junior class met with faculty members on January 7 to evaluate their PSAT scores, review specific questions, and gain a stronger grasp on what to expect when they take the SAT.

Jeff Horner, History Department Chair and Upper School teacher, presented the SAT workshop along with Jan LeCraw, Whitefield registrar and former math teacher. Horner instructed students on the written portion of the test, focusing on how to outline and write an SAT essay in the allotted time. LeCraw reviewed the math section; she explained the differences between the multiple choice sections and grid-in sections of the SAT and encouraged students to practice regularly and take advantage of the many resources available to help them score their best.

“Students who prepare for standardized tests find themselves more comfortable during the actual testing,” said Horner. “Preparation helps students know the best way to attack the test and gives them a sense of familiarity with a test that many dread.”

Whitefield students are not only outperforming other Christian schools in the nation on the SAT, but are also outperforming independent private schools by more than 100 points on SAT scores.

“As a college-preparatory school, we are committed to giving our students the skills they need to perform at the highest level possible on standardized testing,” said Dr. Kevin Bracher, interim headmaster. “We have several programs already in place to guide our students and are constantly evaluating ways to help students in this area.”
