The WolfPack Varsity Boys Basketball Team hosted Walker on Tuesday night, January 15, and got back in the win column behind a 29-3 run in the third quarter. Junior Eric Lockett led all scorers with 18 points; Brendan Myles (9th) scored 16 points; and Everett Pollard (11th) added eight points and 15 rebounds.
The team picked up another win last Friday, January 18, at Fellowship Christian. The Pack was able to overcome a poor shooting night and pull out a victory over the Paladins with one of their best defensive performances of the season.
The team endured the slow down game of Fellowship and held them to four points in the first quarter and one point in the second quarter while creating 14 turnovers. Unfortunately, Whitefield had difficulty converting all the turnovers into points and only led 12-5 at the half.
In the second half the defensive effort continued as the Paladins scored five of their six third quarter points from the free throw line. Shooting woes continued to haunt Whitefield as the Pack was only able to muster three field goals during that same period. Both teams found the bucket more often in the fourth as Fellowship was able to knock down a couple of three-pointers to make it interesting. However, the Pack was able to withstand the run and finish them off, outscoring the Paladins 13-11 in the fourth for a 34-26 win on the road. Eric was the only player in double figures for either team, scoring 14 points.
The team's latest win was on Tuesday, January 22, against St. Francis. For four quarters Whitefield kept coming, bringing the heat and forcing the St. Francis Knights to play fast and expend a lot of energy bringing the ball up the court. That effort resulted in a 59-51 WolfPack victory at home in an important region game.
The game was tight throughout with multiple lead changes. After a tough first half where Whitefield turned the ball over multiple times, the game was knotted up at 27 all. The Pack was outscored in the third (15-12) as St. Francis led 42-39 to open the fourth quarter.
That was when the defensive pressure wore down St. Francis which allowed Whitefield to take the lead at 50-49 off a three-pointer from junior Berto Dryden with just under two minutes to play. From there on out the Knights turned the ball over four times and the foul-shooting contest was underway. Berto, Eric, and Brendan all knocked down free throws to seal the win for the WolfPack. Eric led all scorers in the game against St. Francis with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists. Berto added 14 points and nine assists, while Myles scored 11 points.
The three wins move Whitefield over .500 on the year at 9-8.
