The eighth-grade boys basketball team overcame adversity to pull out a hard-fought 43-40 victory over Landmark on Tuesday, January 8. Whitefield could not get the ball in the basket from in close or from the free throw line for much of the game but managed to come out on top through outstanding defense and all-around team play.
Trailing by five points at the end of the first quarter, the Pack held the opponent to one point in the second quarter to take an 18-14 lead at the break. Landmark battled back in the third, hitting a mid-court shot at the buzzer to cut the lead to one point heading into the final frame. Unfazed by the emotion of the moment, Whitefield quickly seized the momentum, jumping out to a seven-point advantage and holding on in the final minutes. Jimmy McCarthy (12 points, 15 rebounds) led the way offensively, while Sid Brendel (three points, five rebounds, three assists, four steals) turned in a sterling performance on the defensive end. Jack FitzGerald added six points and great defense throughout the game.
