The varsity cross-country team participated in the Battle of Atlanta, Saturday, September 10. The race pitted teams north of I-20 against teams south of I-20 on a historic Civil War battleground. Two of our varsity boys placed in the top 25 runners: Cameron Thornton nabbed 1st place in the varsity boys' race with a time of 16:34, and Robby Keough finished 14th with a time of 17:38. Solid performances by Holt Merkle, DK Langford, Jacob Fikse, Brent Hildebrand, Tommy Keough, Stephen Bracher, and Justin Samples helped clinch Whitefield's 7th place finish, out of 26 teams. Varsity girls Alli McLemore and Whitney Merkle both showed great improvement since their last meet at Our Lady of Mercy just two weeks ago. Alli McLemore maintained a very consistent pace, finishing with a time of 25:31, while Whitney Merkle sprinted across the finish line at 24:05.
