Saturday was a great day at Whitefield Academy, as the WolfPack hosted the fifth- and sixth-grade football league. Whitefield joined the league for the first time this season, and Saturday was the first home game. The day included four football games on our campus and hundreds of visitors from seven neighboring schools. Linda Simpson, Lynn Dupree, and Jimmy Fields worked with our team moms and a host of parent and student volunteers to ensure the day was a resounding success.

Whitefield played Fellowship Christian. The WolfPack fought hard in the first half, but fell behind 12-0. The team came roaring back in the second half when Parker McKinney (6th) threw to Zachary Justice (6th) for a 24-yard scoring strike in the third quarter. Julian Munoz (6th) followed up with a two-yard run for the two-point conversion, closing the gap to 12-8.

On the last play of the third quarter, Parker again hit a wide-open Zachary, and Zachary rumbled 77 yards for another touchdown and a 14-12 lead! In the fourth quarter, Julian ran a sweep around the left side for a 10-yard touchdown, and the WolfPack fought to protect a 20-12 lead as Fellowship drove down the field with a chance to tie the game. Matt Soud (6th) ended Fellowship’s chances with an interception on our own seven-yard line with 10 seconds left, preserving the WolfPack victory!

Parker finished the day with 154-yards passing, 41-yards rushing, and two touchdown passes. Zachary finished with three receptions for 107-yards and two touchdowns. Julian finished with 33 yards rushing, a touchdown run, and a two-point conversion run. West Peterson (6th) also contributed with a nice 38-yard reception in the first half, and Robert Matherne (6th) added a 9-yard reception and seven yards rushing.

Julian led the team on defense with 11.5 tackles and caused a fumble. Russell Bell (6th) also played strong defense with nine tackles. Zachary had 8.5 tackles; Louis Brogan (5th) had six tackles; Matt had 5.5 tackles and caused a fumble (in addition to his interception); and Jovani Simon (6th) had 3.5 tackles. The defense caused three fumbles, with fumble recoveries by Parker, Louis, and Jovani.

After two losses in our inaugural season, this is the first fifth- and sixth-grade win in Whitefield’s history! The WolfPack team is now 1-2. We will play Mount Paran Christian on Saturday, September 22, at 1 p.m. at Fellowship Christian.
