Natalie Saxon (’04) visited Mr. Lezcano’s Spanish classes and talked with students about her experiences living abroad. Natalie has traveled to 22 countries, the latest being Guatemala, where she has lived and worked for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Youth in Development sector. Her work in rural Guatemala is to mentor youth leaders, train youth service providers on how to teach life skills, sexual health, and substance abuse prevention. Her goal is to mobilize the community to support the youth population. The people of her pueblo have been nothing but warm, receptive, and patient in teaching her Spanish and the Mayan language K’iche’, she explained.
Natalie encouraged the students in Mr. Lezcano’s classes to go on international mission trips, as those were her first experiences abroad and what inspired her to seek the path she has taken, and to consider joining the Peace Corps as a way to start their careers and gain international experience.
As a student at Whitefield, Natalie performed in several plays while in high school. In 2011, she returned to Whitefield as a theater teacher, directing “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play.”
