From visiting Greece on an education trip to working at a musical theater camp, Whitefield Academy Fine Arts teachers were busy this summer traveling and perfecting their talents.
For Middle School art teacher Debbie Childree, summer vacation included a three-week trip to Anna Maria, Florida, where she gathered references for paintings, talked with galleries and painted. “I cherished this time to create and develop my personal artwork, and skills,” said Childree.
Like Childree, Lower School art teacher Natalia Hicks also found herself miles away from Whitefield Academy. She spent her summer studying ancient art in Greece. “This was my life’s dream,” explained Hicks.
Elizabeth Weathington, Lower School music and technology teacher, took the Youth Choir from Due West UMC on a tour of South Carolina. The choir had the opportunity to share the love of Jesus with others during their visits to a children’s home, a children’s hospital, a nursing home, and a church. She also worked for two weeks with a musical theater camp through the Due West Children’s Theater. At the end of the two weeks, the campers performed Into the Woods, Jr.
Fine Arts Director Stacy Quiros was extremely busy during the month of July. She played background music for the St. Simons Island Coastal Photographers Guild’s event “The Big Photo Show” on July 5 and then performed at the South Cobb Arts Council’s gallery exhibit on July 28 at the Vinings Library. Quiros also traveled with the Whitefield Jazz Band to the Golden Isles for them to perform two concerts on St. Simons Island and two concerts on Sea Island. She ended the summer performing French music for a Buckhead summer garden party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Milner with Middle School chorus teacher Abe Okie.
For a second year in a row, Upper School art teacher Rebecca Brown was selected to show an art piece in the Metro Montage at the Marietta Cobb Museum. The Metro Montage is the MCMA's annual juried exhibition featuring all types of genre, medium, style, subject matter, concept and/or technique.
In August, Orchestra Director Emily East and two of her violin students provided music for the 31st annual Juried Award Exhibition reception and award ceremony sponsored by the South Cobb Arts Alliance.
