Sixth-grader Drew Justice recently represented Whitefield Academy in the National Elementary Chess Championship held in Nashville. Drawing over 2,000 players from around the country, the annual four-day event begins with a six-round blitz (fast chess) tournament and concludes with a seven-round standard tournament. Drew had an outstanding performance in the K-6 blitz tournament, finishing in first place overall!
In the regular tournament, Drew came close to claiming another national title. After winning his first five matches, he played very well in round six to earn a draw against the eventual national champion from New York. Still tied for first going into the final round, Drew was outplayed by a strong opponent from California and ended the tournament in eighth place. Way to go, Drew!
