One of the highlights of Whitefield's second-grade year is participating in a special program offered by Zoo Atlanta called Night Crawlers, where the students are taken on tour of the zoo after-hours and then get to spend the night right there at the zoo!
They arrived at Zoo Atlanta after closing and enjoyed an adventure-packed evening of activities and experiences. The students had up-close encounters with animals; learned a lot about snakes, frogs and other creatures in the Scaly, Slimy Spectacular Amphibian and Reptile Experience; and learned how food is prepared at the animal nutrition kitchen (ANK). They then settled down to spend the night in the zoo's Education Center. After breakfast the next morning, expert guides led students around the animal exhibits in the zoo, teaching them about various animal groups and their habitats.
When asked their favorite part of the overnight field trip, our second-graders almost unanimously agreed on two answers: "The baby pandas! We loved watching the two young ones play together in the tub, while mama ate and ate and ate!" and "Spending the night with my school friends! It was great fun!"
