While every season at Whitefield is a season of giving, December is particularly special with many opportunities for our students to give back to the community in a variety of ways.
Dressed in Christmas colors and hats, Lower School students marched from the Lower School to the Middle School on Dec. 1, carrying hundreds of Christmas toys in the annual Toy Parade. Fifth-graders met the Lower School students to load the toys into waiting vans for donation to the City of Refuge, an outreach ministry in downtown Atlanta. After the parade, Lower School students enjoyed cookies and milk in the LSSAC, served by parent volunteers, while fifth-graders ventured to the City of Refuge facilities in downtown Atlanta.
This same day, Upper School students could be found traversing the classrooms of Morris Hall in pajama pants thanks to a fundraiser for the Center for Children and Young Adults (CCYA). As part of the Pajama Pants Challenge, students were asked to donate $1 in order to wear their favorite pajama pants to school and raise awareness and support for homeless youth in our community. The donations will help provide after-school snacks, bed pillows, sheets, blankets, towels, toothpaste, and toothbrushes for CCYA.
The Upper School Student Council is also in the process of collecting gift cards to be donated to PAWkids, a local organization that provides a quality enrichment program for children in a safe, loving, and Christian environment while providing families with various resources that will empower and encourage them. The gift cards will be used to respond to the needs of those whom they serve.
Middle School students will have an opportunity to show love to others and display their Christmas spirit the week of Dec. 4 during their "Socks for Strollers" fundraiser, sponsored by the National Junior Honor Society. By bringing in a minimum $2 donation, students can wear their favorite Christmas socks all week and support the purchase of strollers for mothers at My Sister's House, the woman’s shelter connected to Atlanta’s Mission to end homelessness.
