The varsity swim team traveled to Georgia Tech on Friday, February 3 (preliminaries), and Saturday, February 4 (finals), to participate in the 1A-5A state meet. In order to participate, swimmers must first swim qualifying times during the regular season. Representing the WolfPack on the state team this year were Isabel deAntonio (9th), Emilie Grand'Pierre (10th), Audree Grand'Pierre (12th), Brooks Merkle (11th), Grayson Nour (9th), and Kaitlyn Stewart (11th).
On Friday night, the girls medley relay of Audree, Isabel, Emilie and Kaitlyn cut another second off of their fastest time of the season, but fell just short of qualifying for finals. Audree swam a season best 25.13 in the 50-yard freestyle to become the first alternate for the finals. Brooks qualified for the finals in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke, and Emilie qualified in the 100 breaststroke.
Saturday saw the best swimmers in the state competing for the state title. Whitefield started out strong with a 13th-place finish by Brooks in the 200 IM. Later in the evening, Brooks returned to the pool in the A final of the 100 breast. Swimming his fastest time of the high school season, Brooks made the podium, claiming third place in the state. To close out the meet, Emilie swam a season best race in the 100 breast to take 12th place.
Congratulations to the varsity swim team for a very successful season!
