Whitefield Academy dominated the 1600-meter event at the GHSA Boys State Championship yesterday in Jeffersn, GA. Cameron Thornton (12th) successfully defended his state title from 2011, finishing first in 4:20.74. Robby Keough (9th) was less than a second behind Cameron, taking second place in a new personal record time of 4:21.56.
John Alar (12th) and Eric Lockett (10th) also represented Whitefield well at the championship. Eric took fifth place in the triple jump with a new personal record jump of 41-11. John completed his track career at Whitefield with a new personal record of 6-2 in the high jump, finishing in fifth place.
The boys team tallied 26 points in only three events which will likely place the boys team in the top ten when all the state events are over.
Robby, Eric, and the rest of the varsity track team will be back next year, continuing to make a name for Whitefield in track and field. Cameron moves on to Texas A&M University on a track scholarship and John will continue his track and field career at Rhodes College in Memphis.
Special thanks to these senior boys who provided leadership and inspiration throughout the season along with other track and field seniors Jay Fields, Rebecca Kerman, D.K. Langford, and Taylor Tutt. Way to go, Pack!
