The varsity baseball team defeated Class AAA Sonoraville 2-1 in a pitchers' duel Friday, February 19, at Lakepoint Sporting Complex. With the win, Whitefield improved to 2-0 for the season.
The Pack scored two runs in the first inning as the Sonoraville pitcher walked three batters. Luke Miltner (12th), making his season debut, scored John Schwartz (12th) with an RBI fielder’s choice, and Russell Bell (9th) later scored on a wild pitch.
Casey Bowman (10th) making his second start in as many games, held the Phoenix in check for three and two-thirds innings, striking out five batters and giving up only one run on three hits. Jacob Pitts (10th) entered the game with the bases loaded in the fourth and closed out the inning with one pitch. Jacob finished out the game striking out four batters, highlighted by pitching out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third and no outs, holding on for an exciting win.
The varsity squad plays next on Wednesday, February 24, at North Paulding. The junior varsity baseball team opens its season on Monday at Pace Academy
