The Whitefield Academy boys basketball team battled long-time rival St. Francis in an equally matched contest of determination and grit, coming out ahead with a 75-73 victory. The first quarter offense was opened by Isaiah Hart (12th) who put points on the board against St. Francis. Brendon Myles (12th) opened the season on three-pointers, scoring two in the first quarter, along with a layup. Isaiah added two three-pointers of his own and a hammering dunk, bringing the first quarter to an end with a WolfPack lead, 22-15.

The second quarter was a full-on back-and-fourth battle with St. Francis stepping up their game to match Whitefield’s scoring run. Jimmy McCarthy started the quarter with a layup, and the battle ensued, but the WolfPack was in the lead with 5:22 left, 29-22. A three-pointer by Malik Jones (12th) and another by Isaiah squelched St. Francis’ momentum for a moment, but they continued to fight back. Isaiah added a basket with only 53 seconds remaining, and converted two out of three free throws to end the second quarter in the lead, 42-36.

The third quarter began just as furious as the first two, and the WolfPack continued to pour on the athletic fervor. Brendon added another three-pointer, and Noah Dryden pitched in his own three-pointer. But St. Francis continued to bring on the heat and with only 2:34 remaining, the margin between Whitefield and St. Francis narrowed to only 50-46. Brendon scored a floater in the lane, but St. Francis pressed on and took the lead with seconds remaining, 52-54.

During the fourth quarter, Brendon stole a pass at half court, and drove for a basket, then earned another free throw point, restoring the Whitefield lead, 57-56. Isaiah stole the ball, slipped past a defender, and dunked the ball while an electrified crowd cheered. A jumper from Isaiah helped with the lead but St. Francis fought furiously and took the lead again by one point. Brendon restored the lead once again with 2:30 remaining. The crowd froze in anticipation as Malik threw a three-pointer that cleared the net. St Francis player Kobe Simmons tied the game up with a three-pointer. Whitefield drove and missed in the last several seconds of regulation play, but with only three seconds remaining, Brendon fought relentlessly, grabbed a rebound and put up a shot successfully in the middle of the lane. Brendan’s heroic shot kept the WolfPack from overtime and won the game, 75-73.

Top performers in this game against St. Francis were Isaiah (37 points, 5 assists, 2 blocks),

Brendon ( 25 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists), and Malik (9 points, 2 assts, 2 steals)
