Over 275 fathers and their children enjoyed an overnight adventure at the 11th annual Lower School Dad’s Campout on September 19. The campout, which was held on the Whitefield campus for its first 10 years, was held at Camp Highlands in the North Georgia mountains, to accommodate the growth of the event.
“No train, no train, no train,” cheered Craig Miller, reminiscing about the interruption of sleep caused by a train every year when the campout was held at Whitefield. Miller coordinated the event along with other volunteers.
“The campout on the Whitefield campus was a great experience,” he continued. “But we outgrew the available space. By moving to Camp Highland, we have more time to spend as a community,”
One hundred twenty-three dads and their 165 children arrived at 1 p.m. Saturday and bunked in cabins in family groups. They spent the day together, enjoying one another and a multitude of activities, including rope courses, water activities, and field games. In the evening, the campers enjoyed barbeque, fireworks, and s’mores before heading to bed. On Sunday morning, they worshipped together with music and a devotional...
“The Camp Highlands staff was completely dedicated to serving the dads and their kids, and this gave
dads a chance to focus entirely on their kids,” said Miller. “Every year, the campout is a wonderful time to create shared experiences between fathers and their children and lifelong memories are made. This year, you could watch the dads become kids again throughout the day. It is amazing to see grown men playing, laughing, and enjoying their kids.”
