Ten Whitefield students recently earned high marks in the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Creative Writing Festival. Sophomore William Hellier earned a Superior rating and his writing piece will now advance to the regional competition.
Nine other students earned an Excellent rating in the competition. Fourth-graders earning the distinction were: Katy Burklin, Avery Lows, Kaden McKeown, Sidney McReynolds, Ava Petro, and Carter Snyder. Alex Bauer (5th), Zoe Justice (5th), and Jimmy McCarthy (10th) also received an excellent rating.
Students submitted a rhymed or free-verse poetry, an essay, or a short story by mail. The writing pieces were then judged by three independent scorers. Each piece was evaluated on a list of criteria such as creativity, readability, logical thought, use of literary devices, and theme development.
“This year, Whitefield’s Lower School submitted six pieces to be judged. Of those six, all of them scored an excellent!” said Melinda Lee, fourth-grade teacher. “The Festival provides students with a great opportunity to use and get feedback on their writing skills”
