Whitefield freshmen completed the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) on campus recently, a program teens under the age of 18 are required by Georgia law to complete in order to obtain their Class D driver’s license.

The course was taught by Steve Black of the Georgia State Patrol, who reiterated the importance of driving safely for the sake of themselves and others on the road. During the course, Black discussed several statistics concerning teen driving, including that fact that:

  • Teen drivers are 50 % more likely to crash in their first month of driving than any other time;

  • 57 percent of teen crashes are from going too fast, not paying attention of failing to yield.

  • More than 50 percent of high school students text while they drive

During the course, students put on goggles that simulated drunkenness, to educate them on how deeply alcohol impairs judgment. The students also watched videos emphasizing the dangers of texting and the importance of being alert at all times.
