Whitefield juniors and seniors, along with their parents, are already actively engaged in the college planning process, attending several meetings to discuss the details of college applications and prepare for the two most critical years of college planning.

Senior Seminar

Seniors attended a mandatory college meeting to discuss application deadlines, essay writing, teacher recommendations and other elements of the application process. Because the senior year is focused on the application itself, Adrienne Gilbert, Whitefield college counselor, stressed the importance of timeliness, focus, and attention to detail as students narrow down the colleges to which they will apply. A new addition to the Whitefield administration is Megan Hutchins, registrar.  Hutchins formerly worked in the admissions office of Georgia Tech and used this insight to help the students make the most of their applications.  Hutchins detailed the importance of the Common Application, a digital college application that can be sent to over 500 colleges and universities.

Senior Parents Meeting

This meeting was a panel discussion led by Gilbert with Hutchins and College Counseling Assistant Jennifer Peterson.  They detailed the senior year timeline, various deadlines for the first semester and reinforced all of the important information previously discussed with the students.  The meeting walked parents through the application process and addressed issues such as financial aid, standardized test scores, and scholarships and grants.

       Junior Breakfast

The Class of 2015 attended a junior breakfast and learned about Whitefield’s second-to-none Life and Career Planning program, which helps students identify their values, goals, strengths, and aptitudes.  As junior year is an important year to master the various tests required for admission and scholarship opportunities in college, timelines and test prep were also covered.  Finally, the meeting covered the importance of college visits, attendance at local college fairs, and the opportunities they have here on campus with over 40 colleges planning on visiting our campus.

Junior Parent Meeting

Junior parents attended their own panel discussion meeting with Gilbert, Hutchins, and Peterson.  Details of the Life and Career program were discussed, focusing on the final summary meetings where parents, students, the Leadership Companies consultants and Mrs. Gilbert all meet together to plot a strategy for the college search.  Gilbert also encouraged parents to expose their students to as many different institutions as possible through college fairs, college visits, and discussions with college admission reps visiting Whitefield. She thoroughly reviewed standardized testing and the importance of preparing for testing through rigorous study.

All four of these meetings illustrate the extensive college planning program at Whitefield, which begins in the eighth grade when students attend their first academic counseling session to map out a plan for classes in the Upper School.

Whitefield graduates attend colleges and universities from New York to California and from the deep South to New England. The Class of 2014 received acceptances from University of Southern California, UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Virginia, University of Michigan, Colgate University, Wake Forest University, Haverford College, Georgia Institute of Technology, The University of Georgia, The United States Naval Academy, Davidson College, and Washington & Lee University and more.

“Our graduates leave prepared for college,” said Gilbert. “Last year’s class was awarded more than $6.5 million in scholarships and grants. I can’t wait to help the Class of 2015 find their college fit! They are an incredible group of talented and intelligent individuals!”
