Whitefield Academy board of trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, parents, students, and special guests recently met together for a ceremonial groundbreaking of a new Upper School building. Cobb County Commissioner Woody Thompson and Smyrna City Councilman Pete Wood also joined the celebration. Following the groundbreaking, a reception was held to honor special guests.
Designed by the architectural firm Perkins+Will, the new Upper School will be built by Van Winkle Construction. This 37,000 square foot academic building, part of an $11.5 million capital campaign to improve Whitefield’s campus, will house 14 classrooms, four science labs, offices, and a 400-seat black box theater for dramatic performances, concerts, recitals, and weekly chapel services. Since its establishment in 1997, Whitefield Academy, now a 75-acre campus, has continually enhanced its presence in the community through economic development, as well as offering solid academic, arts, and athletic programs.
“At Whitefield Academy we work hard to craft a strong foundation,” said Headmaster Dr. John Lindsell. “The theme for our capital campaign has been Building for the Future because we are not only constructing a new facility, but building a training center where boys and girls can mature into well-educated Christian men and women.”
Almost $8 million of the contributions for the capital campaign came from the Whitefield community with 100 percent participation from the board of trustees and faculty and staff. Atlanta-based foundations also provided significant support to help us reach our goal.
“Completing this campaign was about much more than just raising funds for new facilities,” said Tom Wood, director of advancement. “It was about our community and area foundations coming together and making a statement of faith about what God is doing at our school.”
“We are excited that we can give our faculty and students new facilities; however, this campaign reminds our entire community of Whitefield’s mission: to ‘bolster Christian families in rearing young people who go on to college and life with a passion for learning, for others ahead of self, and for the living and active Jesus,’” said Lindsell. “In the midst of a weak economy, all of our supporters stepped up in a big way to make a large investment in the Christ-centered education that Whitefield offers.”
