Gabrielle Boswell (11th), Cara Grace Hildebrand (12th), and Anna Long (12th) represented Whitefield Academy in the 12th Annual Congressional Art Competition. Held in congressional districts across the country, the competition recognizes outstanding high school artists with scholarships and awards. Gabrielle earned an Honorable Mention ribbon for her artwork.

Over 20 schools participated in Congressman

David Scott’s district; he took time to recognize each participant and encourage their artistic endeavors. This is the first time Whitefield has participated in the competition.

“Whitefield was well represented in this exhibit that celebrated and supported the visual arts in our community," said Rebecca Brown, Upper School art teacher. "It gave all students the chance to see a variety of work created by local high school students, to compete with one another for scholarships and for the opportunity to have their work displayed at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. “

Below are the art pieces submitted by Cara Grace, Gabrielle, and Anna.

PreK4 and kindergarten students enjoyed a performance by Lee Bryan, aka “That Puppet Guy” today in the Lower School Student Activity Center. Lee performed his show, "Travelin Tales," sharing three different folktales from India, North America, and China. The stories had an anti-bullying theme and also taught about honesty, cooperation, and the fact that "bigger isn't better."

"Mr. Bryan not only involved the audience in his show, he took the time to explain and demonstrate how his puppets were made and how they move," said Rainey Perry, PreK4 teacher. "Shawn Hamler, CJ

Jordan, and Brynn Eckerson were all chosen from the audience to demonstrate the puppets. Everyone enjoyed the show!"

Bryan is a nationally recognized touring artist who combines live vocal characterizations and songs with innovative puppet designs. He uses rod puppets, shadow puppets, and beautifully hand-crafted animal masks in his shows.

BLOG POST: Pitching A No-HitterBLOG POST: Pitching A No-Hitter

Freshman Sam Fuller is a member of the varsity baseball team and had a chance to open as a pitcher in the team’s first game of the season. He pitched wonderfully, winning the game against Georgia Gwinnett College with a 12-0 no hitter. Below he shares some of his thoughts on starting that game and the baseball season.

Pitching A No-Hitter

by Sam Fuller

Playing baseball has always been pretty second nature to me. However, I don’t think I have ever been so nervous during a game as I was that day. Only being a freshman and being called on to start the first game of the season was pretty crazy. The day before I couldn’t sleep, and the day of, I couldn’t focus during class at all.

When I got off the bus I knew it was go time. I had to bow my neck and go to work. It was good to have guys like Matt (Olson), Bailey (Combs), Luke (Miltner), Ryan (Wesley), and Bradley (Davidson) encouraging me and having my back. Also, Coach Burgess (volunteer coach) came out on the mound after my first batter and helped calm me down a bit. He has a very calm way of talking and wasn’t angry at me for being a little wild on my first batter. I got out of the first inning one, two, three, which was incredibly unnerving.

After the first inning ended I was able to settle in and start pounding the zone. Throwing a no-hitter wasn't the big deal to me. I just wanted our team to win.

It was a plus that it was a no-hitter, but personally I am just happy that my team won. We are a smaller school, so for us to go out there and win against a big 5A high school was a real statement. With the guys on this team and the new coaching staff on hand, I think we’ve got a shot these next few years.

Today Whitefield Academy is launching a Parent Opinion Survey to gather parents’ feedback on a variety of topics important to the future development of students and the school.  The study will help Whitefield evaluate academic performance and the importance of extra-curricular programs, among other topics.  Data will be analyzed and compared to previous surveys to provide perspective on trends over time.

While Whitefield welcomes parent feedback at any time, Headmaster Kevin S. Bracher, Ph.D., invites all parents to complete the survey at their earliest convenience and to be honest in their responses.  “Every family’s participation in this study is important,” said Bracher.  “The understanding we can glean from the data will help us in our efforts to continue to position Whitefield as a premier college preparatory school for Christ-centered families in Atlanta.  We will be the most successful at achieving our objectives if each family takes just a few minutes to submit the survey.”

Families will receive a personalized survey link in their e-mail inboxes today.  The links are specific to each family and should not be forwarded.  Please direct any questions to the Headmaster’s office.

Twenty seven students were inducted into the Whitefield Academy chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) on Thursday, May 6, at a ceremony in the Louise Owens Theater. The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

During the ceremony, current members of the NHS expanded on these four areas and outlined the qualifications that the new inductees met to join the chapter. Students had to have a B plus average and demonstrate qualities such as scholarship, integrity, responsibility, courtesy, leadership, a willingness to accept direction, and a commitment to serving others.

“The goals that NHS promotes closely align with the Whitefield mission statement,” said Dr. Kevin Bracher, headmaster. “We congratulate these students for their achievement.”

Jesse Breite, Upper School English teacher and NHS advisor, called each student’s name and each lit a candle, representing one of the pillars of NHS, as they were inducted. Each student also shared why they chose that particular trait and why they wanted to grow in that area.

The inductees also repeated the NHS vow, “I pledge myself always to see the light of truth, to hold scholarly habits, to engage in worthy service, and to lead in all things that shall advance the welfare of the school."
